My so-called boss decided Citrix Metaframe XP was the way to go for our new computer lab. Well, we've had nothing but problems when
the students are running Photoshop, Word, and surfing the internet. Printers hardly work correctly, and students are seeing printers
they shouldnt be seeing. Mind you, we have no formal training and we bought some cheap book and we still dont know what
we're doing. I am busy developing web stuff for our portal and stuff so i haven't had time to check out citrix. He's supposed to be
doing that. With that said, can you give me some tips as we will be reinstalling the server tomorrow! We've had too many problems
with SP3 so we decided to just re-do things from scratch.

1 - One client who has a fat client accesses a specific application through Citrix. She has a local printer and anyone who logs into
the thin clients see her printer. Kids dont know any better so they decide to print to her printer!

2 - Anyone running TC have problems with TC's running Windows CE? I have no idea why my boss went ahead with the Compaq T20.
Compaq stated themselves they their TC has problems with losing network connection. They told us if the TC couldn't find the
terminal server, then disconnect it and let it sit for a while. I'm tempted to buy a used TC running Sun or Linux and see how that works!

Let me get this straight.... your users are running Photoshop on a Terminal Server?

Are you on crack, man!?

(By the way, your problem description makes no sense. You can't install Citrix (server) on Windows XP. If you could describe the problem and desired solution better, we might be able to offer more guidance.)

I have been working/setup TS servers for a couple of years, and this is the first time I have heard that the printers are screwing up in TS.

Photoshop work just fine on TS as an ocassional use, but it is not ideal for lots of work because some colour reproduction lost.

1. Unshare the client with the local printer printer. Checking the users settings too see if the printer maping is alow or not: "Terminal Services Configuration" -- "RDP-Tcp Properties" -- "Client Settings"

2. I haven't try WinCE on TS, but so far I haven't have any complaint from NT4, Win2k, OSX, and Linuxes users.

Where can I check the settings? In Active Directory for Users/Computers or the local printer's properties page?

I didn't try it yet, but I did click on the security tab in the printer's properties' page and made sure only the person using that PC is allowed to use the printer. I would like to have the students not see this printer once they log into the terminal server.

Maybe u can help with this new problem? I fixed the printer issue. it wasn't autocreated for some reason whcih is good.

Ok ... I published 4 applications with only 3 being access by students only. The other program can ONLY be run by faculty members.
I went into the User tab under "Properties" and only placed the Students group for the 3 programs. I placed the user name in
the other program.

However, I logged on as a student and she can access all 4 programs. I logged on as the faculty member and she too can see all
4 programs!

Try remove "Everyone" : Program Files > Security
Then add the user group to the directories that you want the users to have access.

The other method is to map the user TS session to a specific program path: RD Connection > Options > Programs > Start the following program or connection > Program path or file name.

Or, create shortcuts icons of the specific programs that the user group can use, and drop it into their user home directory. Then map their TS session to it. Use "Start the following folder" instead of/or inconjunction with it "Program path or file name".

I belive the first method is the quickest way to go, because it is easier to admin groups, while the second method require that every user have to have their session map on every thin client machine that they are allow to use.

Good luck!
