Any tips on getting the CHEAPEST wireless-G device to get my xbox on Live?

I've got a Linksys wireless-G router in my bedroom and my xbox is hooked up to the big screen two floors below.

I need to buy a wireless adapter *today* and I want to get a decent deal.

Best Buy sells the Xbox game adapter for $85.... and they sell the Linksys / D-link brand adapters and bridges for $99-$150.

Will any 802.11g wireless adapter / bridge / access point work? Do you have any recommendations? I need the device today, so ordering online is not possible.

Gotta be wireless. Staples sells a D-link brand and a Belkin brand wireless access point...both say they will connect a PC to a wireless network, so I assume that these will do the same for an xbox? Would these work? And if so, which brand is better.... Belkin or D-link? The belkin looks nicer and has 2 antennae versus D Link's one.

Are you using a Linksys WRT54G? I got creative with my Xbox setup and bought two WRT54Gs, one for the internet connection, and the other to connect my Xbox via ethernet cable. I also used the Sveasoft firmware to enable the bridging mode on one of the routers and had it connect to the one controlling the internet connection. It's not as easy as buying a wireless bridge, but for me it was cheaper... the router was like $50 or less when I got it.

Yes, I have the WRT54G as my home's wireless internet connection. Would you be able to help me set up my xbox if I bought a second WRT54g?

I'd go with the Microsoft one or the LinkSys one. I'd probably buy them both, see which works better, and take the other one back...

I've used both the Microsoft Xbox adapter and the Linksys WAP54G. While the MS one was much easier to setup, the signal is flakey. The Linksys was a little more difficult to setup, but seems to get a better signal. I like the idea of the WRT54G w/ Sveasoft firmware approach, but I seem to recall some issues on the brigding capability of the firmware(or my mind could be playing tricks on me). Google to see if you can come up with anything about it.

Good luck,

i've used the sveasoft software to bridge my wrt54g's for my xbox... only problem I have is that it's wep only (no wpa support) other than that it works fine

Yeah, I had a lot of trouble at first trying to get the client mode to work on the 2nd WRT54G. I figured if I ran the second router in client mode, then it should act as a bridge and connect to the 1st WRT54G. It never worked for me, so I abandoned that method and am using WDS instead. Basically, for each router, if you go under the wireless tab in the admin page, then WDS... I put in the MAC address for the other router. Like for the 1st router, I would change it to LAN and put in the MAC address of the second router. Vice versa for the 2nd router. That enabled me to get the Xbox and my Tivo online through the second router. I am also using WEP and not WPA, due to support issues as mentioned earlier.
