1. Don't settle on the first place you see. Have a look around and see what's available.
2. When you're there, ask some of the people that are going in/out what they think of the building. People are usually brutally honest about problems in the building when asked.
3. Check for broadband availability. :D
4. Have at least a month's worth of reserve money to cover "unexpected" expenses.
5. If you have a problem with the way your roommate is doing something, talk to him/her about it. Nothing will ever get solved if the other person doesn't know about it.
6. Please don't bitch about your roommate here on ATOT. (unless it's a juicy story :p)

Take pictures of the entire place before you move in. They will try to jack you for your deposit when you move out, so it's helpful to have photographic evidence.

READ your lease. Trust me, the owners will hold you to it! And once you sign it, you are legally obliged to stand by it.

cover subletting with your landlord, just in case, get anything thats different from the lease in writing.

find out if everyone you're sharing the place with has to be on the lease. Sometimes they try to make everyone responsible for everything that happens, so if one skips town they can go after the other or whatever.
