any tips for a future uncle?

i just discovered that in 8 or 9 short months, i am going to be an uncle. while this is exciting news, it is also a high-pressure situation that i am likely to fail miserably at unless i have the oracles of unclehood at ATOT to dispense wisdom upon me.

what must i do to prepare physically and mentally for this challenging opportuninty?

I'm an uncle. the kids love my video games. pretty much all they want to do when they come over.

expect to be asked to do a lot of boring kid things as well.

You're the uncle. You have no pressure whatsoever. Just spoil the kids rotten. I'm 33 years old and my uncle STILL buys me shoes and stuff for my birthday. Uncles are the best.

i am goin to babysit my niece this weekend and she has an easybake and loves that thing. so i thought maybe i could blow her 5 year old mind by making an easybake pizza.

anyone ever give that a try? got any good recipes?

Help your sibling to the extent possible. Be engaging and supportive to the child. That's about it, I think.

there's not much to it... for at least the first year of their life, they're really going to have no idea who you are other than not-mom.

my nieces are 2 and 4. I'm mostly just involved with buying them presents on holidays and helping out the parents as needed.

This is the best advice really. Also pinch cheeks, give noogies liberally, and disappear during diaper related activities.

I have three nephews, so my routine skips pinched cheeks; substituting "Loads of Sugary Treats and Roughhousing Just Prior To My Departure".

Try to play of visit your niece/newphew at least once a week... read to him/her if you can... so that way they are not scared of you when they learn to crawl and also make sure when they grow up they can read/write well in the days of instant messaging/text messaging.
