any tips for 60+ year old looking for jobs

I know someone that used to work as an accountant/bookeeper and the firm moved out of state. I think no one wants to hire someone in this age range due to lots of factors. Any tips or advice for someone in this age range?

What city? Some CPA firms hire additional tax preparers or CPA's during the heat of tax season.

My dad was a financial executive at a few companies. A few years ago (he was almost 60), he started looking for another job of the same level. He wasn't even able to get a request for an interview. After a year of nothing, he performed an experiment where he sent out a revised version of his resume without any dates on it so they couldn't figure out how old he was. He got a handful of interview requests within a week. It seems that ageism is a very real problem.

find a company via his network/associates

work for free. just put in hours doing accounting work there.

MAYBE that will pan out into a paying job there.

I've seen this happen.

Seasonal tax work is a great idea. You can make some good money in a very short time and then have the rest of the year to enjoy life while he presumably is still healthy.

do you like to travel?

if you are an american, or look like one, teach english in 3rd world countries and get paid top dollars! you dont even need any teaching certifications. for instance, in vietnam, you could easily get paid $1000/month being a personal english tutor. (the ave wage is $300/month)

Yeah, I'd get a temp job as a tax preparer at H&R Block or some place similar.

Who knows, maybe you can poach some clients from them 🙂

That is good advice.

Learning is doable (i.e. H&R Block classes for instance) and non age discriminatory and the money is good.

No one worth working for wants to hire old people.

Corrected.
At that age, you can get pretty much any minimum wage job, Convenience Store clerk, Wal-Mart greeter, etc.
Not something a self-respecting adult would, or could, subsist on.

LOL, we just hired a 60+ year old here for a highly compensated position. We interviewed 23 people, most of whom were in their 20s and 30s. I wonder why we hired the old guy :hmm:
