Any thoughts on 4wd vs 2wd in a pickup.

A large truck and 2wd is so front heavy that if you stop on the slightest slope it will just spin in the snow. Also if you just stop in 6+ inches of snow, good luck getting moving. It's possible to negate it a bit with plenty of sand in the back, but you will be extremely limited. It was a wise decision to get 4x4 with any snow. A 2wd will just spin on a significant hill on the grass (again, if you stop with the nose pointed up the hill).
