Due to the market I work at a university library but thats not the point of my post.

Since I work at the university I get to take classes at a MUCH lower price than the rest of the population of the school ($20 per credit). Now if I want to learn database theory and possibly programming (two separate classes) should I take a class (each of which would be 3 credits) or just get a book and teach myself?

Your thoughts.

If you feel comfortable learning it yourself and the university offers a CBE(credit by exam) type program, then go for it.

Some places will not let you just test out of clsases.

IMHO, experience speaks louder than classes. But classes speak louder than nothing. I think you'd have a better chance of getting a different job if you can put down that you have classes in this, that, and the other, rather than just saying you read a book.

Thanks.

All good points.

1) University does sort of offer CBEs...they call them online classes. And from what i hear the "professor" assigned to the courses, although at this university, is hardly ever available.

2) Nope...just at the library....Librarian Asst II is my title. Yeah....love this economy.

3) Absolutely experience is the end all be all. I could go on and on about this but it would mostly be a rant. My problem though now is that I'm at a job just pays the bills and does not further the career. So in my mind, and my bosses (who happens to be the friend/mentor I sorely need right about now), best thing to do is take classes/teach myself and get certified. Yeah certs mean squat to experience but I got nothing else to go on. Now its just a matter of what certs????

My disdain for being an adult grows each day.
