Any tarantula owners?

episodic

Lifer
I've recently became interested in keeping a tarantula as a pet.

I've read all the background information on them, and still seem ready to want one.

Any atot tarantula owners?

Tell your experiences. . .

Serious about the tarantula question. . .

Let's see...

"I am going to post in ATOT about spiders and if there is one mention of Syringer, I'm going to lose it." Is that basically what you're saying? 😉

I've got two tarantulas and a scorpion. The experience of owning a tarantula is TOTALLY dependent upon which species you choose. Pick wisely, go by temperment and what they eat, NOT on how cool they look. Get the right one and you'll wind up with a nice pet. Get the wrong one and you'll wind up with an agressive, bloodthirsty beast that's almost impossible to care for.

For a beginner, you can't go wrong with a Pinktoe, Mexican Redknee or Pink Zebra Beauty. They're all fairly inexpensive, easy to care for and docile. Of those 3, the redknee is the classic beginners spider. They've got beautiful colors, are calm and peaceful, hearty and tend to move slowly. The pinktoe can be more of a challenge as they can be FAST. You want to avoid African and Asian spiders, they tend to be expensive, difficult to keep and VERY aggressive.

Of course if you want something REALLY visual, you can try a Chaco Golden Knee. A little more expensive than some of the others, but it's the largest of the spiders that can be safely handled. I've got one and it's a stunning tarantula. Huge, great colors and as gentle as a lamb. I'd start with the Mexican redknee or something smaller though and add a Chaco down the road if you like the hobby and want to expand.
