Any Systems Analyst here?

As part of a project for school, I have to research a career field in my major. In the research I have to interview persons who have been or in the career of my choice via any medium. I prefer E-Mail since its simpler and easier.

I have chosen Systems Analyst. I would like to interview multiple people from different regions of the states and mix of companies and sizes. The interview would take about 5 to 10 mins to complete. No personal information is needed besides name, email, and possibly phone number incase my professor want to verify I actually interviewed people and didn't just jot some stuff down myself.

Well if you would generally be viewed as a System Analyst but given a different title thats fine. Part of my work will be how duties/tasks differ depending on job size, company, etc etc etc.

The funny thing is position titles don't really mean that much from my experience. I've seen electrical engineers doing networking stuff. Computer science peeps doing CAD and so on. The systems analyst that I've worked with really did not do any design work. In my past job, I was labeled as a System Engineer, but I really did not get my hands on designing a system. We were more acting as oversight. The systems analyst pretty much did a similar task. They were responsible for determining whether the system that the client wanted met the requirements. They pretty much oversaw tests and evaluations of the system, wrote a report about it, and carried on. Most of the physical test and evaluation were normally contracted out, so in a way, the systems analyst were just oversight for the testing folks. Pretty much, they were just pushing papers.
 
The focus of this project was for students to look into their major. Since CS/MIS is a bit more broader than other majors, you can do a variety of things. Im trying to focus my study on System Analyst, it is expected titles and duties will vary.
 
jae: I'd volunteer. I hate the engineer titles though. I didn't go to engineering school. I didn't go to administration school.

I build Unix machines (spec them out), run them, tune them, administer mysql databases, develop specs, etc. Basically, I do what needs to be done and if I can't do it, I figure out how.

If that fits your budget, call me.

This might be too broad for you then. Its like trying to write a paper on "scientists" or "engineers". Plus I doubt a whole lot of people here go by "systems analyst", even though it might fit the description of whatever it is you're looking for. You might as well change it to "anybody that works in IS".
 
If I was you I'd pick 'programmer' or 'sysadmin' there are way more of those. Thousands on this forum I expect. Either that or go for something like 'computer scientist' and just ring a university and arrange a meeting with a research assistant or teaching assistant. You can get your foot in the door too if you want a place at that university eventually.

I had the option of having system analyst as part of my title. I chose not to though because it isn't very descriptive.
 
I've been a "process and systems analyst" in the past, but it was more on the business side than the IT side (no comp sci or related technical degree here). If that interests you, feel free PM me.
