Any System Admins/Techs around?

Okay, i have to write a recommendation report for my English class, and I've chosen a comparison of wired vs. wireless networking for a medium size business. I was hoping that somebody on the board with professional experience would possibly be willing to answer a couple of questions via email and wouldn't mind being quoted (in context). Any help or opinions would be appreciated.

Well, for the report, the teacher told us to "make up a hypothetical situation"

, so in this case it's a smaller business trying to decide whether to set up the building with wired or wireless. I guess it'll sort of be touching on the pros/cons of going either route.

For an office, a wired LAN would be best right now. 100 MB/sec Ethernet is still much cheaper than any 802.11X wireless setup, and is also much faster. You also don't have to worry about poor signal reception in parts of the office, or having to deal with an additional encryption setup to make up for WEP's shortcomings.

How about when the uber boss decides that "this should be a wireless campus."

Thanks. I really appreciate the helpful responses. This report has to be 2K words, and i guess based on the popular opinion, i'll make the final recommendation that the setup should be wired. Now, would anybody be willing to talk to me via email about this a lil bit more?

WIRED FOR SURE. Wireless is useless unless you're going to give everyone free access. It's an invitation to try and break your router.

a small group of laptops on a completely locked down AP would be ok, but security has to be carefully thought out. Running a VPN connection or Cisco LEAP would probably be in order. See the ars blackpaper for all the info you'll need in deciding on the setup.

Go wired. Aside from security issues in office builiding you've often got obticals like solid concrete flooring and such to be considered.

dont forget, the massive amounts of electrical wires, phone systems, wireless headsets, and any other type of communication taking up the same frequency as the Wireless network, which can cause sporadic functioning, and even signal loss, which could be bad if someone was doing something and lost signal
