any suggestions on what to do in an 8 hour car ride?

Read a book. I plan on finishing Clear and Present Danger on my plane/car trip to Rhode Island and Boston this week.

Drive faster. Duh!
Why must people calculate a trip in time? Speak in distance, and then we can relate. A 500 mile trip shouldn't take 8 hours.

Yea, it should take about 10.

I have this strange unique ability to be able to sit there staring at absolutely nothing whilst in a car and not driving and magically I can pass 3 hours in 5 minutes.

On the other hand, sometimes it doesn't work and for times like those I take the lappy with a couple of good single player games.

Rent a book on CD/tape from the local library.

Definetly a good idea. Books on tape rule! I remember hearing "Day of the Triffids" on the way to and back from NH. Great book, the movie based on it is a crappy B-movie but the book is really good. It's pretty long too, at least 8 hours. Best part about these is that you don't get carsick or eye strain, especially if you'll be driving at night.

no it should take like 7

500/75=6.66 round to 7 hours for gas stops and such

hell if you drive 60mph it would only take 8.5 hours

how the hell you getting 10 hours? you going in reverse?

You let your wife drive or something?

That's a straight through trip, no stops if everyone in the car is ready for the trip. Gas stop once, maybe.
I guess everyone enjoys spending countless hours on the road and stopping at every rest stop, when you could be where you're going already.

Look out the windows. See places you've never seen before. Learn new things about the world.

I can't speak for the OP's driving trip, but this weekend I'll be making a drive of my own...and let me tell you, I've seen about all of Utah, Nevada, Wyoming and Nebraska that I care to 🙂

Of all the US cross-country driving I've done, I find I-80 across Nebraska to be the worst. 500 miles of NOTHING.
