Any suggestions on this startup problem?

I've had a bit of an issue on this last computer I've built. The first time the power button is pushed to turn it on, the computer gets through bios and the ide scan and everything and is to the point where the windows xp pro screen is supposed to come up (the one with the bar that shows that it's loading up) and it just has a blank screen. If I restart the computer after it gets stuck, it starts up normally and everything is fine in windows.

So, it's not really a crucial problem, but whenever the computer needs to be turned on, you have to do it twice.

I've tried:
a format and fresh install of windows
disabling quickstart so it scans through the ram and would give any slow part time to start up

Here's what's inside
1900+ (stock speed, stock cooling, runs 45 - 50 full load)
ecs k7s5a
turbo link 420 watt psu
512mb mushkin pc2100
80 gig wdse
32mb ati rage ultra
40x12x48x burner
16x dvd
floppy


So, any ideas?


Edit: Forgot one thing that might be the culprit, there's a touch screen on the monitor. It's usb and loads with windows. I'm actually not anywhere near the computer now, but maybe I'll try that next weekend. I can't believe I forgot to try that.
But, if it's not that, anything else I should try?

Hey, I have a K7S5A, so I might even be able to help. Regarding the touch screen, have you installed the USB registry patch (usbdetect.exe) for Win XP?

i've made 5 computers with k7s5a mbs, so I'm pretty familiar with them and I don't think that's the problem, although I could be wrong.

I got all the updates for xp through windows update including the service pack. Is that usb fix something I have to get elsewhere, and if so, where?

OK, glad you found it. You may have noticed that there is also a USB 2.0 patch for Win XP if the touchscreen is USB 2.0-capable. I have subscribed to this thread, and would be interested in learning what the ultimate solution is, if you would be so kind as to post when it becomes known.

The touch screen is USB 1.1, so it's not a 2.0 problem. I'll be sure to post once this gets resolved.

Thanks for your interest. The fix you suggested should probably get to the person when they check their e-mail in about an hour, so I'll post after that if it worked.

Something else to consider -- this could be a shutdown issue. (I thought Microsoft had finally fixed this sort of problem in Win XP, but I discover that they apparently have not.) It may also be related to ACPI. (The K7S5A is definitely ACPI compliant, but sometimes things do go wrong during a Windows installation.) Thanks for the links. Sounds like this might not be a quick fix. I think I'll wait to try some of this stuff on my own rather than have the owner of the new computer do it, which means it'll have to wait until the weekend.
