Any suggestions for scanner software?

Old system (Vista 32 bit) and old scanner (Brother MFC-8840D) which came with Paperport 9 light (the last good version of Paperport apparently, from the reviews). Clean install of whole system but the install disc for this MFC printer/scanner says it's version of Paperport incompatible with my operating system and refuses to proceed.

Any suggestions on decent, preferably free scanning software to scan docs to pdf? Multiple page docs fairly often.

Scanners are notorious for their incompatability with newer operating systems. Maybe Brother has some newer drivers and software that would have come with the scanner. At some point Vista had some major Updates/Support packs. It took me a whole weekend last time I reinstalled my one computer with Vista 32 bit. Good Luck.

I tried compatibility mode before posting-didn't work and the installation hung up, but I'll try the Vista driver/software package ketchup79 suggested. Thanks.

Nuance (who owns paperport) recommends using their version 11 product. Looks like you can upgrade for free if you own a Xerox or Visioneer Scanner. I don't know if you want to drop money to upgrade it otherwise. For the price they quote you could just buy a new scanner with software.

We had similar problems getting our Xerox520 scanner to work on Windows 7 when we migrated from XP. We got it to work with the new version of paperport..but really we ended up just upgrading the scanner not long after anyway.

ketchup70's post (#4) solved my problem. Thanks a lot!

I may follow up with what you suggested adreamer, except I've heard so many terrible things about Paperport since Nuance took them over that I may just stick with Version 9-a known good (enough) item. EDIT-no way I will-those prices are ridiculous, are full retail or close to it for a version several stages out of date (they are up to version 14 now). Gotta love Nuance.

Glad it worked!

Yea I would stick with what you have or just upgrade the scanner. I would only suggest upgrading paperport if you really really need to stick with the OS/Scanner you are using.

We upgraded paperport at work but it was a free upgrade..then the scanner died anyway so we just bought a new one.

Glad the download worked for you.
