Any suggestions for classical music?

🙂There are many reasons why people listen to classical music.

You are correct with the "makes me look smarter" comment. Why do you think all upscale type stores have classical music playing instead of some Top-10 Pop crap? B/C it's CULTURED, that's why. 🙂

I like classical music, but I'm no expert. What I like to do is go to BestBuy (or store w/good CD selection of your choice) and buy the "Classical Music Compliation CDs".

They have titles like "Classical Pieces 1654-1724" meaning the years the pieces were written. I bought a 4-CD set at BBuy for about $20...each CD has about 15 pieces on it...awesome selection.

Until you find an composer that you like, buying the compilation CDs is a good way to get your feet wet.

Debussy has some AMAZING music...and for some variety...Art of Noise (project CD) was a recompilation and remix of Debussy's works. Interesting and worth checking each out. 😉
 
I have a great fondness for Baroque music

Bach was the greatest composer EVAR

Corelli (concerto grosso)

Vivaldi (not just 4 Seasons)


Also like polyphonic music. Try teh Talos Scholars. Go to the library and borrow some CD's. Be a good way to get an idea of what you like.

I think it's pathetic to want classical music that makes you "look smarter" or makes you go to sleep. If this is your requirement, then it really won't matter; just buy the first thing you see. I really don't care for the ephemeral listener; those who show up at concerts just because they want to feel cultured.

It's become increasingly difficult to find anything of quality in any store these days. Occasionally I'll get lucky and find something of value at my local Border's, but I have little luck anywhere else. I purchase my favorites from Amazon UK, as it seems all the older, higher quality, productions are only released in the UK.

I own hundreds of albums, have thousands of mp3s, and every single one of them is excellent. Just buy some albums and see if you like them.
 
Personally i prefer full orchestral works over concerto's and solo's, so my vote goes to Kallinikov and Tsaikofsky for writing some of the more exciting full orchestra pieces 🙂

but if you're into the violin, Symphony Espaniole, Bruch, Mendelssohn, Mozart's 5 concertos, are all fun to listen to (and play~).

Although I'm not a huge fan of the more "bombastic" pieces, I agree w/ Tchaikovsky. His "Eugene Onegin" is particularly exciting.

In every classical music related thread, I always suggest this piece. Sadly, it cannot be purchased in the US (or at least last I checked), but it is unequivocally the most beautiful piece I've ever heard. Emma Kirkby is, imo, the most beautiful soprano voice. James Bowman is also an incredible male voice. Christopher Hogwood is also excellent.

If you purchase ANY piece with any of the above talents on the label, you'll have found a true gem indeed. Anything by the Academy of Ancient Music is usually excellent as well.

For fans of Mozart's Requiem, this production features Emma Kirkby soprano, and Christopher Hogwood conducting.

There are so many incredible classical pieces, it's impossible to list all favorites...

i second BUTTERFLY LOVERS, very beautiful traditional chinese piece. you have to watch not the song, but the person who played it. (try vanessa mae)

all the composers listed above are great recomendations, vivaldi for great viola compositions.

if you're into violin, zukerman, perlman, stern, tellefsen, HEIFETZ, lin just to name a few. personally, i dont like the newer violinists, vanessa mae, sarah chang, joshua bell because they lack any real unique skill, but are still alright nonetheless.

most of the better records will be hard to find, and you probably wont find them in stores because they were recorded 60+ years ago. you could look on a P2P application to find some of the older violinists.

as for sleep music, you might want to look at: arve tellefsen-send in the clowns
as that one is quite a universal favorite for sleep.

My favorite song ever is "Canon in D" by Pachelbell. It's a wonderful song.

That said, I like Bach, Mozart, and Pachelbell. I like others, but those are the top 3. Dvorak is a little more upbeat.

If you're feeling American, get some Souza.
 
while your at it go rent amadeus(mozart) directors cut and immortal beloved(beethoven)🙂 good movies🙂 neither is in any way boring. 5.1 surround is sweet.

I'm a big fan of Brahms but many do not share my love 🙁
 
I like Bach's Double Violin Concerto and Violin Concerto in A Minor. I like Mozart's Horn Concertos and generally all of what he writes. L'Arlesienne Suite No. 2: Farandole is excellent too. The Sorcerer's Apprentice music in Disney's Fantasia is very exciting. Beethoven.com has an internet radio that you can listen to.
