I just ordered The Talisman in hardcover from amazon.com, can't wait for that one. What are your favorite books by him? Mine are

1. Talisman - I can't say enough about this book, IMO by far his best.

2. The Stand Uncut.
3. The Dark Tower Series (I like 3 and 4 the best)
4. The Tommynknockers
5. The Shawshank Redemption (movie was good too)

I liked his short stories better than his novels. His novels just seem like long winded versions of his short stories. Nabokov he ain't.

The Talisman was a good one. I'm a huge Dark Tower fan, myself. I actually have two of the Donald Grant edition hardcovers from that series. I have The Gunslinger and Wizard in Glass.

All those you listed are among my favorites, too. I actually _really_ liked Hearts in Atlantis. I read it this summer and thought it was great.

Edit:
Anyone read On Writing yet? I'm slowly working my way through it (don't have much time to read), and it has some pretty interesting stuff about his life. He actually doesn't remember anything about writing Cujo! He was so drunk and coked out of his mind back then that he can't remember anything about it.

Ark,

He also wrote Stand By Me, it is called "The Body", and it is in the same book as Shawshank Redemption, "Different Seasons". He also wrote The Running Man (movie w. Ah-nold), and Maximum Overdrive.

rocmonster,

I don't agree. I do like his short stories a lot, though, but I like his novels the same.

Engine,

I haven't read anything by him after Gerald's Game and Deloris Claiborne.(Except for Dark Tower 4). I haven't liked the newer stuff.

I am a huge Stephen King fan, have been since I was ten years old.

1) The Stand (In my opinion his best work ever, I have read it multiple times, and always find something new.)

2) The Talisman
3) The Gunslinger series (I can't wait for the new one to come out)
4) Night Shift
5) The Shining

ArkAoss: If you want to read good non horror stories by Stephen King, read the short story The Body, which Stand By Me was based on. Also try Eye Of The Dragon, which is an excellent book about princes and wizards.

GF,

I think I mentioned The Body, forgot all about Eyes of the Dragon - that was a really good one too. I like the way he wrote it - almost like a children's tale, like the Hobbitt.

Do you know when the next Dark Tower/Gunslinger book is coming out?

I see that most of you have the Talisman high on your lists too. What a good book!

I am iffy about his stuff. I really liked the Stand. The Eyses of teh Dragon was alright and the Bachman books were good. I read the gunslinger and was not impressed enough to go on with the series. All his other stuff tends to bore me. Instead I love reading Clive Barker. His stuff rocks! The Great and Secret Show is an amazing book. :D

Harpo: I am on a slow computer and dial up, so I wrote that before you posted, it just took a while to go through. ;) And the next book is supposed to be out this year, lets keep our fingers crossed. :D

BlackFlagg:

The Great and Secret Show was a good'un :) I haven't read too much of Barker's stuff (Weaveworld, The Great and Secret Show, and Imajica), but what I've read I've liked a lot. I think The Great and Secret Show was my favorite of his, though.

Dream Catcher, what's that one?

GF - It's supposed to come out this year? I thought # 4, Wizard & Glass only came out a couple of years ago....

Wizard and Glass came out about three years ago. He's been putting them out every three or four years, so he's due for another one soon. Hopefully :)

From his website:

Stephen suggests you read Hearts in Atlantis (in stores September 1999)--it's not an actual Dark Tower book, but is part of the story. The next actual Dark Tower book has not yet been written and does not have a title, but if all goes well, it should be out in 2001, followed by two more--one in 2002 and the final one in 2003.

I have not read Hearts in Atlantis yet, now I have to get that one.

The first of the novellas in Hearts In Atlantis has a fair amount of Dark Tower stuff in it. It also ties in some of his more recent books with the Dark Tower story as a whole. I also manages to be a pretty darn good work of "mainstream" fiction, IMO. It's one of my favorites of his.

LordMaul: Now go back to your picture books and stay away from the big peoples section, before you hurt yourself... ;)

Engine: I think I will buy that book this weekend, it's been a while since I read a new one by him. Thanks for the info.

I started reading the Dark Tower last summer and due to a lack of time am about half-way through The Wasteland. Hopefully I'll be able to finish Wizard and Glass before he comes out with the next one. But the series is awesome

FrogDog, and Yakko,

Did you not read the Talisman, or did you not like it? If you haven't read it, I would recommend it over any other SK book.
I will definitely have to get Hearts in Atlantis now, if it ties characters into the Dark Tower.

Yakko,

Flagg has been in many, many of his books, he just doesn't always go by that name :)
