Any speculation why "Nehalem" is called Core i7?

I remember someone said awhile ago that the reason for designation of Core i7 will be clear once we see the Nehalem full lineup.

So, has anyone speculated why it's Core i7? The only thing I can think of is that if Pentium is 5, so Core2 stands reason to be 6, then this Intel iteration would be 7. However, Pentium was for 586, but we've had Pentium II, III and 4, so Pentium is not really 5 anymore.

It's probably because the new version of Windows is called "Windows 7". Whether that remains as the marketing name, or if that's just a code name, is open to speculation.

intel became a partner of apple and now calls their product in the beginning with the "i" theme

Nevertheless, there must have been something, somewhere, that inspired them to name it as such.

I heard Apple secretly bought Intel, and now all of Intel's products will now have the iSomethingMoronic moniker, like all of Apple's products have.:)

Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows 98SE
Windows ME
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7

Did I forget any ? Or does Microsoft *only* count these ones as operating systems ?

How about this:

1. Pentium
2. Pentium II/Pentium Pro
3. Pentium III
4. Pentium IV
5. Core Duo
6. Core 2 Duo
7. I7

I would doubt it has anything whatever to do with Microsoft nomenclature. The same theory was going around back when Windows XP was new and the Athlon XP was coming out at the same time.

IMO the P4 doesn't even need to be in the list because it represents a deviation from the actual engineering evolution of the Pentium to what it is today and what it will be with Nehalem.

1. Pentium / Pentium Pro
2. Pentium II
3. Pentium III
4. Pentium M
5. Core Duo
6. Core 2 Duo
7. i7

Because Nehalem sounds too Jewish in an election year?

is Nehalem from Intel's Israeli team?
:D

IF SO, in Numerology - especially in the Hebrew Cabala - "7" is perfection

now that the [*real*] metaphysical reasons for it's name are out of the way, Intel probably picked it to cause discussion in the tech forums and also it has meanings on many levels - e.g. it is a '7' in their CPU series [depending on you count them] and it ties in with Windows 7. Don't forget the association with the "i" in "iTunes"
[jobs should sue]

it's name finally chosen is partly based on marketing research; but it's genesis was probably a marketing guy's drug trip - or 'inspiration'

So I'm not the only one who thought "nehalem" was a Hebrew word :p. It's actually a Native American tribe in Oregon.

As for "i7" -- random letter generator + random number generator.

excuse me and Shalom, Amber

but "nehalem" is Hebrew *also* :p

Lets go back to Nehalem. In Hebrew nehal means a stream.
Nehelam means multi streams. Now, Gesher+Nehalem in Hebrew literally means bridge+multistream.

Literally and metaphysically: "the perfect multistream bridge"

http://badhardware.blogspot.co...009-intel-in-2008.html

Look at their other naming conventions:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_codenames

that is why our new site, AlienBabelTech is also "metaphysical"

believe it

Based on the Wikipedia, I would bet that its named after the town, or the Indian (native american) tribe the town was named after.

Ding ding. All that nonsense about Nehalem being Hebrew or being pronounced "ne-HA-lem" or whatever is wrong. It's named after Nehalem, Oregon. It was mostly designed by the Oregon design team. I sat in an early presentation of "What is Nehalem" and seeing how slide #2 was "A small town in Oregon", it leaves very little doubt on where Nehalem came from.
