Well, I'm thinking of taking up snowboarding, and I need to know a few things. How long does the board need to be (I'm 5'11). Also, whats a good band. Suggest on for me under $200.

5'11" would be a 160 or so.

What board? The best you can find a good deal on. Generally avoid the super flexible park boards......all mountain is a good choice.

A lot of us got new boards from Sierrasnowboard during some of the crazy sales they've had the past few months. I'm looking forward to using my first non-rental board this Winter.......a Palmer Burn I got for $99.

Like Cattlegod said, you need to take your weight into account also. I'm about 5'9" and skinny as shit, and my first board was a K2 155" (now I have a 156" K2 board). It's probably a bit big for me but I've never had an issue with it, and primarily ride freestyle.

That's another thing to consider, typically freestyle boards are smaller for tricks and spins and freeride/alpine boards are larger for more stability.

You could probably ride a 150" - 160" board, depending on your weight and style of boarding. That's just IMO though. Best bet would be to go to a local shop and ask someone there.

Rent, take lessons and get a feel for what feels comfortable and maneuverable.

I'm 5'9" and have a 155cm Burton Custom.

Agreed. Rent a bunch of different styles of boards and lengths. You can go from there. They all feel very differently.

length depends on weight and your riding style. Also depending on your foot/boot size you may need a wide board (generally size 11+)

I have a Custom X 160

What he said! Go out and take a board for a spin. Then rent another one your next time out. You'll know what you want once you've actually tested several. Granted you'll probably burn up to $100 on rentals alone, at least when you finally get your first board, you'll be satisfied with it.

I rented for nearly a year and a half before I finally bought my own board. It's 3 years old now and I still love it -- though, if I have enough spare cash, I'd love to get a Burton Fish.

I'm partial to Burton & Ride brands.

If possible, borrow a buddy's board to try it out. Definitely rent the first couple of times but from what you've said: 160 Wide seems about right for you and at your skill level, get good boots over a good board.

And I'm assuming you have good winter gear? Nothing sucks more than being wet and cold on top of a mountain when its blizzarding. (Yet that can be so awesome w/ the right gear... oh Whistler I miss you)
