i see this as just another Web 2.0-style bull hype-fest by the press where they THINK something really big is going on, and the truth is that no one gives a sh!t except for them. they all have a hard-on for blogs and honestly nobody reads these things except for the poster's friends and stalkers. second life is the same thing for geeks who aren't coordinated enough to play Halo, along with slightly more sophisticated stalkers. that's not exactly worthy of repeated news coverage. but i guess when you have people who don't understand technology reporting to other people who don't understand technology, this is what you get.

If you're a pedophile or a furry, you'll fit right in. Otherwise go past it and keep on running away.

mostly its lazy journalists/article writers that love to use the concept of virtual reality as a jump off point to fill pages on whatever social issues they want to yap about. very convenient and so the media echo chamber creates the hype it feeds on.

Sorry to ruin your precious little Economist, but the game sucks and was never even close to popular or played by a decent amount of people. It makes an interesting article though, which is all they care about.

Not sure what your little rant is all about.

The articles were interesting ;)

Agreed.

It's a marketing triumph where Linden Labs has convinced clueless journalists and corporate execs that Second Life is where "the cool kids" are and that it's "a with-it happening place," not just a VR chatroom for furries.

It's sad to see companies like intel and MS paying for virtual real estate in SL (and running banner ads to admit it) because they're stupid enough to fall for this.

A woman I worked with had a son who was more than addicted to that game. It's genius though because people are spending real money on objects that never exist.

Or you could try Entropia Universe, which is a cash-based economy like Second Life, except entails hunting, mining, crafting, etc. It also uses the Cry engine (it was just updated a few days ago and looks 100x better than it used to) so it's not that bad. I've been playing for a really long time, so if you have any questions about it, feel free to PM me.
