looking to spend about $70 on a pair of running shoes. New Balance has been suggested, especially since there is one a mile from my house. Any specific models of shoes you like? I weigh ~170 and running on concrete.

Aasics and Brooks are probably the best.

I use Brooks now, but I am going to get a pair of Aasics this weekend.

New Balance is also good, but I prefer those two. Try and find a show that fits you right. I have a really high arch, so I have to find a shoe that fits me. At the same time, I have tendenites, to I need a shoe that gives me good knee support.

I love my Brooks Beasts. I have kind of screwed up feet, and these are the most comfortable athletic shoes I can remember. They're over $100 most places, though. :(

also...i'll be going into the army soon and i'm trying to get a head start on my PT. Is running in military boots a bad idea? Since i'll be doing it at BCT (basic combat training), should i prepare my feet for the worst and get them accustomed to the design of the boot by running in them?

shoedog.com (you will have to click on shopping tools and then shoe dog as the page no longer directly links).

Supposedly alot find the recommendations good.

online vendors esp clearance at the big shoe shops have deals.

I got a pair of Ken Griffey's (not running) that were still at $140 locally for $30...I wish I bought more but I thought there was some catch. Once I tried to reorder they sold out.

The most important thing is to find a shoe that is right for you. There is really no "best" brand or shoe. The Mizuno's that are right for me may be horrible for your arch and/or running style.

I go to a small privately owned store, owned and run only by experienced runners. They take a look at your feet and how you've worn down previous shoes and then bring out a few pairs of shoes for you to try on. They then send you out onto the sidewalk to take a quick jog and you can choose the shoe that feels best. If you don't have a place like this around you, their website might help.

Running For Kicks
Their "Sole Mate" will also help you figure out what's right for you.

Their site has extensive descriptions for each shoe in several categories containing information like: "This shoe is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for running 30 miles a week or over."

I'm sure browsing around there will help you greatly. Just let me know if you have any more questions.

Good Luck!

Just as a side note: Matt Withrow, the winner of this year's Footlocker National High School Cross Country race, works there.

I have had some Brooks in the past, however now I think New Balance makes the best runnings shoes for the average runner.
The biggest reason why I prefer New Balance is that they come in a much greater variety of sizes and it seems much easier to find a shoe that fits much better.

By the way, I believe the Army does not do PT in their combat boots. You may do some jogging here and there with them, but all of your standard PT and your final run will be done in atheltic shoes. In fact, I think the Army uses New Balance.

I know they won't let Canadian Forces do ANY PT in our boots. Most horribly designed pieces or dogcrap I've ever worn. I've rolled my ankle at least a dozen times in them. Overly heavy, overly uncomfortable, overly thin.

Oh, and Nike makes a decent runner. Athlete's World has a set of the R9000 runners for 59 bucks canadian...good shoe, lasted me 6 months of hard, hard running.

I think Nike makes some of the worse running shoes now. In the past I felt that had some good athletic shoes, but years ago their quality and fit has just gone way downhill.
Also Nike shoes just come in medium 'D' width and my foot runs a bit narrow.

I personally use New Balance and they have been great. I don't run a lot though ~12 miles a week

I don't know much about running shoes, but I were told that the best are the flat bottom ones. You know, the ones that don't have the arch in the middle.

I think those are only for speed, if you run 10 miles with those kinds of shoes you will be hurt.

No, because you're suppose to "roll" your feet when you run. You plant your heels and kinda "roll" toward your toes. I was a Marine, and that's how they taught us to run, we were suppose to get the best possible running form, so we don't hurt ourselves in training. We were some running fools I tell ya, and we ran for miles, I hated running, but I had to :(.

Those flat bottomed ones are also referred to as 'running flats' and many marathon runners wear that type of shoes. The are definetly designed for more than 10 miles at a time, however they do have a shorter life span than a 'normal' shoe.
