With Intel-based Macs on the horizon, it'll be interesting to see how well the new line of PPC-based Macs will sell.

Rumored that at least the top end model is going to be dual-dual core. Powerbooks should also (hopefully) see a decent upgrade; to 1mb cache G4s and DDR2.

So I've been getting ready to buy one and then someone here on the forum tells me that everything is going to change on Wednesday..
Any rumors? I'm rather anxious in anticipation!

Ok so the time has come and gone. Anyone know what happened? Is now a good time to buy a G5?

I think there are rumors of an update "any day now."

It depends which G5 your are looking at. The iMac G5 got a pretty worthwhile upgrade. There was a speed bump to 2.1GHz on the high end, DDR2 memory, X600 video integrated iSight and a new Front Row media control application that gives the iMac Media Center-like capabilities (sans TV tuner and DVR capabilities, though, a huge oversight). There is even a pretty basic remote that comes with the iMac now, which looks like the love child of a TV remote control and a Shuffle.
The PowerMac line hasn't been upgraded for a while, so I figure we can expect at least one substantial PowerMac upgrade (possibly to a dual-processor dual-core configuration with DDR2 and PCIe graphics) before they go Intel Conroe-based in late 2006/early 2007.

well, we already know for sure that there wont be a powerbook or ibook G5 series. G5 series runs too damn hot.

Ahh I see. I was confusing the PowerMAC with the G5. Damn I really wanted them to update the PowerMAC 😉

Yes, the Wednesday event updated the iMac and iPod, no PowerMac/PowerBook upgrades, much to the dismay of many eager fans. The iMac did however gain DDR2 memory and PCI-E graphics, which generally means updated PMs can't be far behind. I wonder if they'll go twin single cores, solo dual core, or twin dual cores (although 'upgrading from 4-core G5 to 2-core whatever Intel doesn't sound quite right).

When they do the Intel upgrades to the PowerMac line, it'll likely wind up still being a 4 core machine since they will probably use a Conroe-derived Xeon workstation platform (Woodcrest is the name of the chip, I believe) as the basis for the high end of the next generation PowerMacs.

I've been hearing the top end model is going to be dual-dual core while the midrange/lowend is either going to continue using the dual g5 or a single dual core g5.
Personally the enhancements of the newer G5 processor (notably 1mb cache up from 512k per core) lend me to believe that the midrange at least will have a single dual core cpu, if not a lower speed dual-dual core. 🙂
