Any recommendations on an Android device on AT&T?

I'm currently using an international (Latin American) Nokia Lumia 1520 and my girlfriend is using a Lumia 920. Both work great, but the 920 is pushing three years old. Microsoft is taking their time with hardware, so perhaps it is time to look elsewhere.

The Galaxy S6 looks very nice, but it doesn't look like the AT&T model has any hope of a boot loader unlock. I don't want to be tied to my carrier for software updates.

I know the Nexus 6 is pretty easy to root, unlock, and flash, but it's a bit too old for me to go for now. Should I just wait for the next Nexus? The M9 seems a bit underwhelming.

Hello,
First what is the budget that you have allocated for buying a new device?
Are you willing to buy it with a contract extension ?
I would recommend Nexus 6 or wait for the Google I/O to see if the Nexus 5 2nd generation is being launched or not :).

However there are also some alternatives like:
- One Plus One
- LG G3
- Note 4

I was going to say the same thing as RossMAN above. You've waited this long, why not wait a little bit more.

Windows 10 is also coming out this summer and with it presumably a bunch of new options from Microsoft. You're going to have a boatload of different choices this Fall.

You don't HAVE to get an AT&T phone to use it on AT&T. Most international phones will work on AT&T (just check which bands are supported). So you can buy the international version of whatever you want if that version has been unlocked to your liking.

Actually, the T-Mo version of the S6 seems to cover every AT&T LTE band as well. So that's the obvious choice for an unlocked one that's easily obtainable.

OnePlus one is on sale this week, $250 for 16GB and $300 for the 64GB model. That's a great price, and should hold you over until the new Nexus phones this fall.

@pantsaregood: you could also wait and see what devices will motorola release this year :)

Seems like an odd thing to wait for. A lot of the recent moto phones have come to Verizon and only Verizon, which does the OP no good
