Any recommendations on a PSU with 20+A from 12v and SLI Support

SLI support is a marketing ploy.

The Seasonic S12 is a great PSU, but only the 500-600 watt models have the dual PCI-E connectors need for SLI operation (without adapters that is).

Hmm, but that model does not have at least 20A for the 12v output.

I read a lot about problems people had with the 7900GT, and most of them seem to be the lack of proper amperage for the 12v output.

different brands rate their output ratings and 12v ratings differently. some give us their continuous output, some give their max output, some say their psus output 18a on their 12v rails but only when the temperature inside is 20C. then it decreases as it gets warmer (gaming). u have to go for a reputable brand name, basically those they most people buy and aren't complaining about.. thats a good start for your psu search, good luck

BTW OP the Seasonic models suggested are dual rail...

I did some more research and found that the Ultra line offers a good PSU through Tigerdirect.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications.../item-details.asp?EdpNo=874746&CatId=0

How's that one compared to the ones you listed?

I'd take OCZ anyday over ultra, and the same with Newegg vs. Tiger

Preferences aside, you think I could get the same performance form Ultra?

What is the rest of your system specs?

I know OCZ has great support for thier products...

No, but you could probably get a much bigger fire.

Seriously, don't buy Ultra. Buying power supplies based solely on the rated specs is not a good idea when some manufacturers lie outright in their specs.

Then you didn?t do very good research, Ultra is a junk brand.

Is this based on experience? After 30 reviews read on people who have used the Ultra, no one has had problems.

its based on other people having their motherboard set on fire when using ultra psus. google it. stick with the brand names from above

Wow, that sucks, I've never heard of a PSU actually igniting into flames. I can't find it in google, anyone have a link?

30 reviews conducted by fan-boy sites that have no business doing PSU reviews in the first place no doubt.

The Ultra (X-Connect) has been properly tested maybe a half-dozen times, of those there are at least two instances where it went up in smoke when it was put under full load.

If you do some searching on these forms you'll find users with similar experiences.

30 of what kind of reviews? User reviews of power supplies are almost always worthless (except the ones that say "it screwed up horribly"). Many "professional" reviews are also extremely flawed.

Ultra's X-Connect is a badly made product, period. I would rather make something myself than trust them.

What's your budget?

My fave PSU to recommend these days is the FSP FX600-GLN.

It has more than adequate power for nearly anyone a very good $140 USD price.

Quad +12V rails @ 15A each, with rail each for SLI/Crossfire card configs = superb for the money.

Oh, they were just reviews of people who had bought one and used it for several months without problems. I mean, you would think if these things were prone to screwing up, people would complain about it.

Anyways, I'm just pressing this as much as I can to get as much info that I can.

From what I've googled and read so far, a lot of people say Ultra is bad based on a review by Maximum PC, but I don't think they published the article online.

I found one on Tom's Hardware.

Ultra isn't on there, but a brand suggested so far, OCZ, didn't pass the test.

The Ultra literally blew up in the MaxPC test. Ultra later wrote a letter stating how the PSU they sent them was a "pre-production" unit and shouldn?t have been tested under load, give me a break...

The other test I know of an Ultra exploding is this TrustedReviews roundup.

The new Ultra models the X Series from what I have read are actually very good PSU`s.

The problem Ultra is having is the same problwem that Antec has had for years.

When they first started up until about a year ago there PSU`s actually honestly were not worth having!!

But as of late it appears that ULTRA as a company has turned the corner and is actually putting out a better built product!!
