Any recent interesting portable mp3 players?

The last mp3 player that I was interested in was the Nomad MG II. I don't like cd based mp3 players as most of them (except the slimX) are pretty big and can't slip into a pocket easily. Even the SlimX's size is large compared to the MG II or Pocket Concert. The Ipod was a nice one from Apple but I don't like hard drive based players either. I prefer solid state media.

So... has the portable mp3 player rage died down these days or am I just not up to date?

Nope, the flash-based MP3 players have pretty much topped out. Since they're at the feesable(sp?) limit for how much Flash-ROM can be realisticly put in(1GB may sound nice, but the costs are unreal), there isn't much else to do. Flash MP3 players like the Rio 800/600 aren't going to die any time soon, but they probably won't be improved on.

<< iPod is the sh!t. Jut got my 10gb one. Why don't you like hard drive based mp3 players? >>

Hmm... well my friend has a Creative Nomad Jukebox and the "boot" time (not sure if it is because of the HD or the os but never encountered that long of a wait with other players) was pretty annoying. When switching tracks quickly, the Jukebox seemed a bit slow as well. Have you encountered this quirk with your Ipod?

Hmmm... is there any mp3 player with a decent remote, like the sony mds have (ie. R900)?

This MPIO 128 MB player for $219 is one I've considered (though the price is now too high), and was also looking at the Bantam (see cnet) but the user reviews were less positive.

The blue Yepp from Samsung was also nice and small, but it's gone now and the replacement YP-700H isn't out yet.

I just got one of those yesterday. It is my first dealings with MP3 so the learning curve is steep. Any good places to go online?

For general mp3 info I believe the main AnandTech site has a FAQ. If you're too impatient to read: Exact Audio Copy + LAME.
