any reason why I shouldn't buy a Canon PowerShot G3?

I've had my eye on this camera for some time now and I need it for the first day of school (next Wednesday) but I've been putting off the purchase in hopes of a price drop. At this point I'm about ready to buy it, so any last minute pointers? good? bad? which place is the cheapest? any accessories I should get?

Also, as opposed to the new G5 which is what $100+ more? All for a bit of extra zoom and an extra MP. Maybe something else I'm missing.

Help?

ok well 1) I can't afford that and 2) I don't need that. I'm specifically referring to the G3 and G5.

You don't understand I have to have a 4+ MP camera for school. G3 is the best for the features/price so far as I can tell. I've had a much crappier 1.3mp camera I've taken thousands of pictures with for over 2 years now and this'll be a huge step up anyway. This is why I'm trying to get some last minute opinions on that camera, or others in THAT PRICE RANGE.

RE the S50, does it have more manual controls/options than the G3? The swivel LCD screen is kind of a biggie too.

wtf, just get the bloody G3, it a flippin awsome camera loaded with features. If you dont mind the size, then go for it. You wont be dissappointed in the quality, although i think the macro could use an improvement. check out the hot deals forum, and do a search. Next time a dell deals roll around, grab up some cheap CF cards and you are set.

RE S50: you will get more features out of the G3, but honestly i would check out the a80. I dont want to confuse the decision, but the a80 has most of the features you are looking for, or so i think from what i can gather.

Certainly, go with the G3 over the G5. I doubt you'll notice a huge improvement that extra 1.0mpx provides, unless you'll be doing a lot of printing larger than 8.5x11.

How experienced are you with photography? If not very, and you just want a point-and-shoot camera, look at the Digital Elph- and A- series of Canon cameras. If you are looking for more manual features but still want the compactness, look at the S-series of Canon cameras. If compactness is no concern and you want a few more features like the swivel-LCD, look at the G-series. The G-series is great for the person not yeat ready to go SLR but still wants to exercise more creativity than simple P&S cameras will allow.

Feel free to check out my G2 pics...see my sig. Oh, and it's not the camera that makes the photographer. It's the other way around. A pro can take disposable and create a true masterpiece.

"G3 is the best for the features/price so far as I can tell."

Nope, for $100.00 more, the same price as the G5, the F717 is the best bang for the buck. You can price match it at your local Sears.

If you don't mind the bulk, (or dreaded memory sticks

) the F717 is a MUCH better bang for the buck than the G5. It's a big jump in price to outperform that camera.

Bottom Line
  • If you want a long lens zoom 5-megapixel camera, either model is very hard to beat. I don't know of another camera that can best it overall, dollar for value. - Peter iNova
Digital Photography DSC-F717 Review
  • "...Even a year on from my DSC-F707 review I find myself unable to name a new five megapixel prosumer digital camera which takes better pictures than the DSC-F717, and that is saying a lot."
Steve's Digicams F717 Review
  • "...I find it safe to say none will out-perform the F717. From the high resolution 5MP 2/3" imager and the ultra-sharp Zeiss lens to the robust and accurate image processing, this camera is sure to satisfy even the most demanding of users..."
Imaging Resource F717 Review
  • "...you've got an "enthusiast" camera that stacks up against anything on the market. Sony innovations like NightShot and NightFraming are just further icing on the cake. Despite its sophistication though, the F717 manages to remain a very user-friendly and approachable camera - There's no reason for a novice to pass it by in favor of a lesser model, as its full-auto mode is as easy to use to use as anything out there."
NightFraming System
  • To capture beautiful color images in low or no light, NightFraming illuminates the subject with the NightShot® system for proper framing, focuses with Hologram AF and lights the scene with flash
If size is important, skip the G3 and look at the S45.

Sony makes great cameras, the F717 included. It's only limitation being the MemoryStick requirement. Do you have extra CompactFlash disks laying around? What about MemoryStick disks? You might want to compare prices of those storage mediums.

I don't care about the size.
I do care about the LCD.
I can get free media.

Thanks for the comments any more would be appreciated RE the G3. I'll probably place the order on Monday. Should I pay more and get it from a reputable dealer online or just whoever is cheapest? I'm guessing the warranty has nothing to do with the vendor?

Get the G3. G5 is not worth it, noisier & more CA than G3. 1MP is negligible.
Try check out your local Circuit City to see if they still have it for $420.
Do buy from established vendors so that you don't get scam.
As always, don't forget to check reseller ratings.

obviously you can use the pixel depth, however many spend $500+ on a digicam only to take webpics to share with family :) a 1.3MP is perfect for that. If one must have better a nice 35mm and scanner is a cheaper bet still.

I'd love a ultra megapixel camera, but it'd be really just a toy for me...my canon A50 does all I want it too....I wish I didn't have to sell my mint Canon A-1 though while in school, had a nice range of lens.

Only reason I can think of is that if you don't need all those features and everything, then spending that much may be a waste.
