Sometimes it's a local thing or up to the person that owns the flag (family memeber died, etc)

did you see any others down ?

A soldier that was wounded in Afghanistan, died in a hospital in Germany yesterday. Maybe thats the reason who knows. Could be a a well known person that served in WWII that passed away.

C'mon you pups. WWII ended this date in 1945. The flag is lowered in honor of the fallen.

Maybe in a mild way -- I think after 57 years it's OK to not know the specific dates. Day WWI ended anyone? (without Googling!)

Or maybe it's to "commemorate" the signing of the Social Security Act on this date in 1935?

World War I is easy--Armistice Day-- November 11th. I think the year was 1917, but 11/11, which is now Veteran's Day is easy to remember.

the thing that most personally shocks me about WW1 and 2 was that my great grandfather fought as a trench soldier for the whole fours years and didnt get a graze, and my grandpa, his son, went from sept 1939 to 46 in the pay corps (he has bad eye sight) and although half his pay corps intake were killed in two weeks (random shell in northern france), he survived the whole war despite being bombed and manning night time antiaircraft guns etc in northern england.

Wanna trade families? The only thing my family is notorious for is getting hit by other drivers.

I had the radio on earlier. A former governor of New York State died today. I can't find his name. It was no one I've ever heard of. The radio said he was governor for the shortest term, something like 21 days. He died at age 99 in Florida.
