With all the chips flying around now with the 4MB cache and higher FSB, I've been itching to upgrade my system's CPU. Is this a dumb time to do it? I was thinking of maybe grabbing a 6550, but I wasn't sure if the CPU bump would really be noticeable.

Sometimes I wonder really how many folks 'upgrade' because their machines are too slow. :D

I should go ahead and admit that I'm just getting an itch to tinker and am looking for any excuse possible :)

If you're going to upgrade, get a Q6600. No point getting another dual core especially since yours is clocked at 3+ GHz.

He's not going to need a quad core unless he does multimedia encoding. A dual core will be fine for games and everything else.

Wait it out...

if you want to tinker with something, start with about $300 and try to build a computer

From what I've gathered, 3.15GHz is very good for a P965 chipset. The current OCing wonder is the P35 chipset.

I've always suspected that most OCing is because its a challenge, not that there is any real need. Have fun.

Hey, he's got an upgrade fever and in need of fellow AT'ers support. :p I'd say go ahead and get a new toy if you can afford. I mean, people collect stamps for nothing's sake. Playing with computer hardware is one of the least expensive hobbies, IMO.

If you upgrade anything, upgrade the hdd to a Raptor. You'll notice a nice performance boost there.

Ya. If you're not going to go get a Quad. Get a Raptor X.

OR save your money OR give it to me.
