I agree that no game is going to replace driving an actual car, but it'll still work for at least getting the basics down if you have no clue how a clutch works to begin with.

And as exdeath pointed to, not all manuals are created equal.. not by a long shot. You can daily drive a manual with no issues, then jump into a totally different car and it'll take you a few minutes to readjust to a different clutch, clutch pedal, engine characteristics, etc.

If you can master getting the car to roll at idle speed by letting off the clutch and not touching the gas, you've got a chance to actually shift like an expert. If you can pull that off, you can transition to using the gas pedal and shifting into all the gears. The roll method teaches you finesse and the engagement point of the particular car you're driving.

Just thought I'd add my .02 to make it overwhelmingly obvious for you.
Real car only.
No simulator shakes and shudders as you drive the revs too low, no simulator gives you proper feedback. etc etc.
Just don't be intimidated and get in the real thing again. Once you learn it's just second nature. I've daily driven a manual my entire driving life and you don't even have to think about what you're doing. Even on a hill. You only get there from doing, though.

Shift 2 unleashed with the nogrip racing community mod. ITS A FRACKING PAIN to install requiring multiple activations in a mod manager but holy smokes it removes the arcadey feel of the game and the twitchiness at higher speeds. Feels better than any racing sim. Turn off all driver aids and set the competition to novice and they will destroy you.

First course you should try with this mod is the full lap at the ring. I have been playing that thing for two years now.
