My Creative Labs Infra 48x CD-ROM drive is so loud that it is annoying. I have seen (and heard) many fast CD-ROM drives but they are all annoying loud when operating. Is there a way to reduce the noice level? Iz there any fast CD-ROM drive that is quiet? What fast CD-ROM drive is the most quiet one?

I use a Sony DDU220E which is a fast enough DVD drive and is normally just about silent.
If you want to swell your ego with fast stuff, you have to pay in all sorts of ways.

I hear the new ASUS drives are supposed to be very quiet do to their varible speed . My personal preference is Toshiba. I have both a Toshiba CD-ROM drive and a DVD drive. They are pretty quiet. The plus to these drives is they read most anything( per CD-Clone) and they have excellent reliability records. Teac drive are suposed to be good too. I would personally avoid CL drives do to noise and reliability. Nothing against CL in general, they do make excellent sound cards and their video cards are supposed to be good too.

The Teac 540E 40x is really fast and quiet too. You can get it pretty cheap at buy.com. Make sure you get the updated firmware and the drive utility from Teac's website if you go that route to get the best performance.

get 40X drives instead of the 48/50X drives. a little top-end speed for a lot less noise. You'll never notice the speed diff most of the time.

How are they when they read pirated stuff(you know the quality of these stuff) and real bad condition CD-R/RWs?

you cant get any quieter than the kenwood truex drives. since they spin at much lower speeds, the noise is a lot less. a lot of people here despise the kenwoods, but ive got a 52x and a 72x and i've never had any problems with reading cdr media at all. maybe it's because I dont use cheap cdr media and only good quality ones, while others may be using some riteks or whatnot.

My TrueX52x sucked. Yea, they're indeed very quiet and ultra fast, but thats only if you can get it to read. And yea, a lot of us use generic CD-Rs to save money, but too bad it can't read my TEAC 700MBs, the firmware updated didnt make it any better.

I just set my 8X DVD (32X CD) to 8X CD and it makes NO noticeable noise. Just get the Asus CD-ROM speed setting utility. It works on a lot of non-Asus drives. I know it works on Panasonic and Hitachi drives. I know it does not work on Kenwood, Samsung, JVC, and most other low quality drives.

I'll have to agree with the Toshiba recommendation.

I just upgraded from a Kenwood 52x to a Toshiba 48x. This is by far the best CD-ROM I've used. Quiet, quick, and had read everything that I've put in it.

I installed a Creative CD-ROM in a PC for a friend... Man, was that sucker loud. Sounded like a frickin' jet taking off.

Add in another vote for the Teac 540 ide. I trust it enough to do on the fly 12x cd burns. And it's the only ide cdrom that is firmware upgradable...best $40 I spent
