Any quality 5.1 music out there?

There are a few sites with free downloads but it's mostly gay nature/space stuff. Is there any good 5.1 music out there? I just want to hear something that's pure audio that sounds as good as my movies.

There are some good SACDs, but most seem to be Classical. I don't know if you dig classical music.

Check out the typical Telarc, Reference Recordings labels.

I'd suggest looking into super audio CD (SACD) and DVD Audio (DVD-A)

Both are 5.1 and they are high resolution to boot. Some of the better recordings can rival vinyl. Decent dual format players are pretty cheap these days.

These will truly blow your movies out of the water.

I think blueman group has a DVD audio and it includes a DTS multichannel recording as well.

Now you're getting me excited. Any free samples on the net so I can see what you're talking about?

The problem with most 5.1 music is they indiscriminately pan sounds all over the sound field just because they can. It's a rather bleak and unimaginative presentation.

You're more likely to find quality music on SACD over DVD-A, where the rear channels are primarily used for ambience and instrument reverberation. Gives a far nicer sense of depth over the typical DVD-A track, which was often not natively recorded as 5 channel, but simply remastered (in otherwords, panned all over the place). Surround panning without the spacial signature is not worth the disc it's on.

Don't know about free samples.

But SACD/DVDA make for an incredible listening experience.

You're totally correct. But there are some darn good recordings out there.

There sure are, though I've found it to be far more worthwhile to buy two really good speakers. The sound from 5 compromised speakers will be no match regardless of how good the surround recording may be, and ofcourse you're not severely limiting your selection of music.

Considering spidey uses such strong statements as "But SACD/DVDA make for an incredible listening experience.", I highly doubt that 5 speakers wil never be a match for 2, regardless of the recording. You do realize that speakers in surround systems can be just as good as ones in 2.1 systems, right?

I'd love to get a good SACD or something but I'm not sure what would be worth my money. Can SACDs be played in PC DVD drives?

No you will need a SACD player.

And on the mutlichannel vs 2 channel. I listen to music on my 2 channel system. And I mainly listen to vinyl and 2 channel SACD.

No. you need a DVD audio player. But many times they include a dolby digital or DTS track that will play in a DVD player, it just isn't high resolution.

But then with the given amount of money one can get better stereo speakers, where does it stop?

Surely there's a point at which one can no longer get better speakers, at which point you might as well go surround, but until then your options are compromise output quality for channels or not.

That is true. And because I use multiple channels for other things (games, movies), I've just went the multichannel route for the past 3 years or so.

But you need a separate player/drive for SACD AND DVD-A? Heh, well, forget those then. : /

Guess I'll stick to watching movies when I want to truly utilize my rear channels.

You'll find DVD players that will play SACD and DVD-A.

Otherwise you can find 5.1 music in DTS and DD. It's just not high resolution and suffers from the performance limitations of those two.

It's alright, I probably wouldn't notice the difference with my sound system anyway.

So what DTS/DD music disc will be worth my purchase? Any recommendations?
