Any problems with setting up SMTP server on laptop?

background:

My brother's college wouldn't let anyone outside of their network use their SMTP servers for outgoing email. I don't know why they just wouldn't have authenticated SMTP servers, but that's besides the point. The college suggest using our local ISP's SMTP servers, but that is a problem. With verizon, they restrict their outgoing email to only those using a verizon.net email address...

Solution:

What I want to do is to install an SMTP server on my brother's laptop, so that whenever he sends email it will be sent by his computer.

I found a seemingly great program at:

Question:

Has anyone used this program? Are there better (ex open source) solutions? Are there any problems with using your own SMTP server? (for example spam blockers/filters ignoring your email sent out because it is not a "real" host) Possibly people finding out about the SMTP server and using it for evil purposes?

Yeah I used to use it - it works until you find out your ISP blocks port 25 or you then find the people you are sending to block your emails because you are sending them from an IP address with invalid DNS entries.

Not knocking that SMTP server as it does work - but because of damn spammers and scammers ISP's have to lock down SMTP access.

Try AuthSMTP - it's not free (but cheap) and solved all the problems I had with email, using multiple ISP's, when mobile etc.
