I would buy some cheap pillows to throw away when the trip is over, no sense risking your home pillows or bringing home whatever crap is in the beds in your pillows.

One thing: Don't just complain to the manager at the property when you are there. Fill out a customer satisfaction card or call corporate to complain. Once that complaint/report makes it to the hotel's record, it impacts their Quality score (speaking about the Holiday Inn family of hotels: HI, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, Staybridge Suites, Inter-Continental [though you're not likely to have problems at the last one]) which in turn can force inspections by corporate quality control folks which can also in turn trigger a default under their license agreement for failure to maintain brand standards. Should they continue their ways, they can be removed from the system.

Don't think your complaints don't go anywhere or do anything!

i have never had a problem with a dirty room, but at a Hilton, Marriot, Sheraton etc. i would hope they would be clean ;) i always bring sandals to wear inside/a spare pair of socks, and when possible i don't ever walk barefoot around the room. i never use the big comfortors or anything, because like someone said, they don't wash them as regularily as one should hope. if you're cold, ask for extra sheets/blankets. just a few things my dad has tought me :) he travels several times a month for extended periods of time and has yet to catch anything from a dirty room

Just stay a respectable place. I use to travel a lot and found the Marriot hotels (Courtyard for one) were nice. Also, staying at exclusive hotels are nice too.

But there is really no way to be sure of the cleanliness of the place (all that blacklight stuff and all). It's just something you have to expect and to go on with it. I never thought once about it and it doesn't bother me now, and I'm sure no one's gotten sick over it...unless they licked the toilet seat or something.

No, no, no -- not Marriot. :D Holiday Inn.

Actually, if you're looking at extended stay hotels (even if you aren't though), check out Staybridge Suites. Those places are REALLY nice though there aren't very many yet.

IamDavid: The reason Best Westerns can be so awful is because the corporate office has VERY little control over how those hotels are run. Best Western is in essence an association of independent hoteliers who just happen to use the same name. It is quite unlike Holiday Inn or Marriott which enforce specific standards on their properties. Best Western is one of the easiest brands to acquire for a franchisee.

Don't be paranoid. It's like going to a restauraunt, if you've ever worked in any restauraunt you know that all the food isn't handled with as much santiness (word? well you get the idea) as the food at home.

Forget about the pillow paranoia, the pillows are fine. You can bring your own pillow cases I guess, but I don't see the point. The pillow cases go in the same wash as the sheets, so if the sheets are clean, so are the pillows.

I walk around barefoot at hotels...of course I walk around every where barefoot, and have an immunity to althletes foot having had it so many times (if this is possible?!?) but most ppl I know bring sandals for the shower, that is sound advice.

Why would you use the foot to flush the toilet? Do you use your foot to flush the toilet at restauraunts? Same amount of cleanliness, both cleaned every day. Your going to wash your hands after your done flushing, I'm assuming :)
