Any prepackaged "home theatre" systems worth what they are?

I'm kinda looking at getting some sound for my nice tau television, but dont really have the moneys to get a nice audio setup. Are any of the panasonic/phillips/whatever premade systems that are like 400-600 bucks any decent? Or are they all garbage like it seems?

The Kenwood one in that range used to be pretty good (when I got it ~2 years ago). Not sure how they are now.

Pretty much all of the "Theater in a Box" type systems are lower quality than getting the components separately. You get what you pay for. However if you want a good system and don't care about haveing the best of everything then it will probably work fine.

Actually.. I dont necessarily have to get a "cheap" system either. The possabilty(sp?) of getting a reciever and maybe 4 speakers and a sub exists as well if I get pointed in the correct direction.

hey, thanks for the link werk. that actually looks like what I need. I'd probably plunk down some more money for a real dvd player too. Right now im just using my xbox with component cables, which is fine except for the fact that my dvds spin VERY loud.

Both Kenwood and Onkyo make very good box systems, & you can always upgrade as funds allow.

For 99% of the people out there they will be more than enough.

For the freaks, they're a good starting point for a newbie.

I started with a Kenwood HTB-505.

you might want to look at the onkyo ht-s767, it comes with a 5 disc prog scan dvd player and beefed up receiver

my friends just got a samsung DVD player/5.1surround system all in one (DVD player is actually in the receiver). it has all the extra plugins for other components as well, and it sounded pretty damn good. i think they payed about 300 for it at best buy

For the price, it's hard to beat. I purchased those speakers with the SR600 receiver last year, and I've been thrilled with the setup.

I'd agree with what everyone else said. I bought an Onkyo receiver and their 5.1 speaker set and couldn't have been more happy. When I moved into a house with HT freaks, I sold it to a coworker and he's happy with it too.

Keep in mind that you'll really need 5 speakers and a sub. You listed 4 speakers, but the "5th" one being the center channel speaker is essential because a lot of dialogue in movies are played through that channel.

Me glances over at my H/K AVR-7200 receiver, (2) 85L Shiva boxes driven by a "pro" audio amp pushing over 500 watts to each channel. Yup, I'm an expert ... or, so I like to think that my knowledge is up there a ways. 😉
