I did a lot of soul searching and I don't think I want to return to working in the private sector. I signed up for the NYPD's test and am excited about the possibilities, but i'd like to hear someone with experience's thoughts. How soon did advancement come? Do you enjoy your work? Did you ever regret the choice?

I am not a cop but my dad is a RCMP officer, he really likes his job. He has been at it for 17 years now, and he has been promoted from Constable to Corporal. I don't think he regrets his choice, it's a very rewarding job if you can enjoy it. But you have to be prepared to deal with the cop hate that is everywhere. We have lived in some smaller places, and the cop hate is just as bad there as in the bigger places. Nothing like having drunk idiots coming to your house when your not there because everyone knows where you live. But I also remember another place we lived all the old ladies cooked him pies, so there are perks too. 😀

Thanks for your thoughts. I don't think I'll have to worry about much cop hate in my personal life since i live in NYC and cops seem to be well respected. Do you recall how long it took him from being a beat cop to something more substantial? I'm not a physical sorta guy but plan on rising to the occassion, but my background is in publishing/research/media - I want to use my brain as much as possible but would feel stifled if I was stuck arresting drunk people for 10 years, know what I mean?

not in NYC, cops are respected but not thought of as very intelligent.. If I wanted to impress a girl I'd get into finance... I've wanted to be a detective all of my life.. My uncle is a sheriff and I respect him immensely and, well, I think it's an exciting path to go down, after spending my life working for investment banks and publishing houses.

For sure, I wouldn't worry about being less physical. All of the police officers I have met fight REAL dirty, and they alway win the fights. I can't remember my dad ever getting any sort of injury.

It was 3 years ago he was premoted, but for about 8 years now he has been an acting Corporal, doing some of the more important things. He gets to take a lot of courses now, for instance he is a trained sniper. From what I have seen it's always the people who are willing to work hard right away who get premoted first. It may be very different down in NY but up here the bosses all know the "white shirts" and a glowing recomendation from 1 or more of the Sergants usually seems to make alot of difference, and taking the jobs no one else wants. For instance we spent 3 years on an island of 2,500 people most of them drunk fishermen, it was considered "isolated" so it allowed us to move anywhere we wanted afterwards, and that helped to set up my dad's promotion.

Thanks, this is really helpful. My test is scheduled for the 23rd of Feb. I'm kinda nervous but it sounds like an exciting new adventure. Last question, I promise - money isn't important to me but does your dad feel fairly compensated? I know cops aren't rich but did raises come when he deserved them?

From what he said raises came pretty constantly in the 2-4% range. The premotion didn't really bring a huge raise, but in Canada anyway cops are considered pretty wealthy. If my mom had worked we could have been very well off. But I can easily see how NY with its huge cost of living could be very different. We visited the NYPD training center a few years ago it was really cool, it looks like a very nice police force, well trained with tons of history to it. I hope you enjoy it as a police officer.
