Alright i am buying a house.

It has a nice basement but when the power goes out the sump pump stop's working. then the basement floods (if raining hard).

Soo any advice on how to fix it? get a generator backup? battery backup? what?

I would like to go cheap. in the last 8 years it has only flooded 3 times. But i would like to make the basement livable. I plan on putting in a 2nd living room (family room whatever) and a play area and storage etc.

when the huricane rolled through we had a 12 volt car battery ready to hook up if the power went out :)

We had this problem at my house.. dug a trench in the backyard (big hill behind the house) and tunneled the water over to the side of the house. Put a few drains into it and lightly push some dirt/sod back over top of the trench.. give it a month and it looks normal and drains great. No more basement flooding.

If you're really serious, a propane powered generator can be used indoors as long as there is modest ventilation.

Otherwise, just stick the generator outside and run the power cord.

search on google/froogle, you'll find backup sump pump batteries that charge while the power is on and work for about a day of no power.

I'm actually not sure how good of a solution that is. It's probably kinda dangerous, in general.. unless you know what you're doing and perhaps have CO2/CO detectors, heh.

I'm sure most people just use a regular generator and run the power cords where needed.

A propane powered generator would last a lot longer than a gasoline powered one, though. :)

heh yeah i don't think it would be a good idea either.

Been looking up battery back ups. seems there are nothing you can do to convert the one there to use a battery use. But have found generators i can get (but again gas ones just do not seem safe).

But a battery back up sump pump are only like $150-200+

sigh such a pain. the farm house has a basement but i never really used it. So i didnt care if it flooded.
