Any Plans from Intel to release an eight core CPU in 2011

I am really disappointed in Intel having not planned a another six or eight core CPU in 2011. I noticed this because while looking at road maps and reading online that Intel claims that Sandy Bridge is strictly a 1155 socket quad core CPU really gets me upset. Is there a possibility that Intel will release a socket 1366 or 2011 CPU with more than four cores in 2011. I don want to have to wait to 2012 to wait for a more powerful CPU. Any ideas on this guys? Thanks

Looks like only xeon cpu's get 6 or 8 cores for now, but what are you doing that needs so many threads/cores!?

I really dont prefer xenons and please everyone is asking me question like why I need it and stuff lol. I asked a question and I am getting off topic responses without asking the question. So does anybody know any information on this? thanks

Dude, they have sold 6 core i7s from the i7 970 up for a while now. A 2600k system would get you the most performance without busting your wallet though.

Didnt they some time way back say we'd have Octo cores by 2012? My guess is if they appear in 2011 it probably wont happen before Q4 2011. I'd say look for them in 2012 or later. Just an opinion of my own.

Ok thats your choice I really dont like the sandy bridge 4 core or other six core. this whole thread has been attacking me for asking for if there is going to be another six core or eight core CPU. And why are you assuming my needs or like saying there is one already and buy an Xeon. I asked a question and I get stupid questions back at me. I sorry If I sound rude but I just joined this site for some help on this issue and I have people being jerks to me.

There will be socket 2011 (and possibly 1356), which will support hex, and likely octo, core CPUs in Q4. 1155 may well support hex-core with Ivy Bridge in Q1 2012.

No ones attacking you. Its very hard to recomend specific 6 or 8 core cpu's (which arnt on intels roadmap for now) when we dont know the applications they will be used for when a 4 core / 8 thread i7-2600 isnt enough, but on the other side 6 or 8 core xenons are too much!?!

Going into the future, it'll probably be drastically cheaper to get several computers (racks? Beowulf cluster?) running 4 cores/8 threads than it is to get a 16 or 24 core monster machine. Unless if your app really does have immense IO requirements (GB/s) relative to CPU requirements, getting several machines is far more affordable.

Of course, I'm assuming here that you have a specific app in mind, as opposed to flaunting your wealth and simply getting the most cores possible on one machine.

Well, you could do something similar now, but you would have to use software written for that specific situation.

Current speculation is Q4 of 2011 so probably early 2012 another CES release maybe. We are talking 8 core high end desktop cpu and high end Xeon, no
idea on socket however. could be Socket R (2011) only could be 1155 we just dont know.

The post I replied to WAS an 8 core Intel processor. You did not say it HAD to be socket 1155 or 1366 or anything.

You did say you wanted a socket 1366 or 2011, but we thought maybe you did not realize they already made one.

First, Intel probably has its own business reasons for not disclosing its plans.

Second, server-market is the spot to make multi-cores for. There is simply not enough money in octacore consumer market yet. I bet that Intel makes decent money on their current Xeon models and are thus not yet in a hurry to push more out. After all, the Top 500 crown now has Westmere EP's in it (albeit assisted by Nvidia) while the former top dog was Opteron-based.

Consumer markets have little need for 8 cores as it stands. 4 is somewhat overkill in most situations (which is where the current turbo stuf comes in, running fewer cores faster).

Servers and virtualisation are where 8 or more cores realy come into their own.

No, Intel will only go up to 6 cores on the consumer side in 2011. They will release an 8-core server SB and a 10-core server Westmere.

I believe AMD will have a desktop 8-core, but the performance of that is unknown.

Yes intel is suppose to release a 6/8 core enthusiast SB in the 2nd half of this year for sale in the second half of this year . Supposedly socket 2011. I believe one was running at IDC this fall . Not sure. If you look at SB and its effeciency with ondie IGP its perfectly logical tere will be an 8 core release for enthusiast
