Any Places Left to buy 939s?

I have a 939 mobo and am looking to get one more processor upgrade to match the 8800GTS beast I put in a week ago. My current setup is stable and I would not want to rock the boat with a brand new install. Instead I would take this system as far as it can go.

I was considering getting another opteron (I have a 165) but am open to other solutions. Anyone know where I can still get a good performing 939 part?

I guess if the cost is too unreasonable then a mobo/cpu/memory upgrade is my only choice, but in that case I only have $300 to spend on both the cpu and mobo (the memory is a different part of my budget).

I <3 my opty but its getting to the point where I'm grazing the "minimum spec" for most games

Have you overclocked that Opteron? Many can reach close to 3GHz with a decent motherboard and if you get a pretty good chip.

There's no S939 processor that would be a worthy upgrade from an overclocked Opteron.

Throwing money into 939 is not a good idea. You can buy a AM2 4200 and a ecs board for 79 bucks at frys right now. Throw in some 20 dollar 2x1 sticks of DDR2 and your good to go. If you need a replacement board for an existing setup look in the FSFT section here.

I agree, if you overclock that 165 thats as good as it gets on s939.

For a $300 cpu/mobo upgrade you have two options

dual core option : $80-90 P35 mobo + $200 E8400 or X3110

quad core: same P35 mobo + $200 Q6600

Or if you want to spend less use the same mobo + E2180 for <$100

You won't find much that will beat the 165. Why waste the money?

$300 is more than plenty for a processor and motherboard, especially if you overclock.

If you want to stick with AMD, go with this:

GIGABYTE GA-MA770-S3 AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

Text

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor - Retail

Text

Each of those are $84.99 w/free shipping bringing your total to $169.98.

The AM2+ motherboard will be good for upgrading to the new B3 stepping Phenoms and is a solid AMD chipset. The boost from your 1.8GHz Opteron to the 2.6GHz X2 should be a nice upgrade as well.

Intel solutions similar to this price range will be a Gigabyte P35 lower end board and a 2.2GHz E2200 Core2duo processor.

:)

hmm...how can you guys get good overclocks with the 165...? i can only go up to 2.5Ghz and i have ddr-500 ram...i'd gladly take out the 2x512MB just to get 2.7-2.8Ghz.

If you're being limited by memory, use one of the memory dividers to lower the frequency of the memory...

I hated overclocking w/ DDR on S939 though. Memory dividers were a PITA and I remember my DFI nF4 board wasn't stable with some of the dividers + high HT frequency. My Opty 144 could hit 2.8GHz and maybe even more, but I couldn't run at that frequency without my RAM running at like DDR-300.

Nice to be on AM2 now with memory capable of 1000MHz and no problems hitting high HT.

I needed a DFi Lanparty board to go past 2.5Ghz or so.

For the newegg pricing on 939 opterons, you might as well get an AM2 system, board and DDR2. Gonna cost you almost the same.

my neighbor threw away an A8V with a talking motherboard. (not kidding !) basically,
it said "CPU dead".

so i waited & waited. then i thought i had waited too long, with all the 939's flushed
out of the system. finally bought a 4000 San Diego, for $60. no hurry.

oh yeah, i got it from Newegg. no idea who has stock now. Tiger Direct maybe.

You can pickup an FX-60/Opty 185 on eBay. They will hit 3.2 on air with the right memory and cooler. Some people have hit 3.4.
