Any place to get MLS listings?

Is there a centralized place where one could get all MLS listings across the entire country? Can somebody give me some background on how those listings are maintained. I'm looking for a way to get MLS listings programatically - but wanted generally to get an idea how those are maintained.

I thought you needed to be an agent or broker to get MLS access. Can you get it if you're not?

All MLS systems are independently owned and operated. You'd have to get them by area to go directly to their site. Or you'd have to use a site like Realtor.com that indexes them all for searching. Although I could never stand that site when we were looking.
