Morrowind

Fpr non-3D, the best PC RPGs ever = Fallout 1-2, Planescape: Torment, followed by Baldur's Gate 2 (& Throne of Bhaal)

personally morrowind could have used some more flavorful baddies. however for the freedom it gives you it is an AWESOME game.

I sold MW....though now I think perhaps I should have kept it with all
the mods and expansions that have come out. I was a bit turned off by
the exploits. I remember grabbing some very valuable gems on a desk
early in the game and then selling 'em for cash. There was no penalty
for that as far as I could tell....though if I tried to sell it to the
person I stole it from then I was in deep doodoo.

Also, MW can be a lonely place. Of course, in towns there was plenty of
interaction but when your questing there is lotsa open territory to
traverse with just you and the monsters. Still, I'm tempted to pick up
the GOTY version which I understand contains the expansions and give it
another go.

If you don't mind dated graphics....get/find Ultima Underworld 1 and 2(even dated still great games). You'll find Arx feels alot like them.

I don't know what would be harder.....to find Ultima or to get it to run on a current Windows system.

Morrowind is really good, but its huge immersive world only helps to point out its weaknesses. Like Hadsus points out, the world can feel a bit lonely. The dialog options are incredibly generic and simple. Time actually progresses in the game and there is realtime weather, but the people are ALWAYS in the same place. They never seek shelter and they never go to bed. Also, for some reason, there aren't any children in Morrowind...

Gothic 2 is supposed to fix a lot of that by giving NPCs a daily life. You can follow a farmer around all day watching him work, eat, and go to bed.

Running UU/UU2 is no problem on current Windows systems. Download VDMSound and you are set. Though one problem you may have, is it seems some current motherboards load some stuff into the same memory space that EMS needs to runs in. For instance, on my machine using a 8RDA+ motherboard, if I want EMS I have to disable the onboard NIC in the BIOS. Luckily my second machine with an Asus board has no such problems. Only been one old DOS based title I couldn't run with VDMSound on my XP Pro machine.
