Any other way for Direct File Transfers instead of FTPing?

I need a plan cause my friend won't be able to have a FTP anymore. We are thinking about VPN, but thats slow due to encryption and stuff. Anything else? Any help is aprechiated!!!
 
Are you thinking about VPN because you're behind a firewall? If not you can still use Netbios/Windows file sharing--somewhat insecure, but it works. If you're on Linux/UNIX you can use NFS and if you're using a Mac you can use TCP/IP and go through Appleshare/Chooser. You can also send files through AIM, ICQ, etc. I hope that's the answer you're looking for...good luck!
