Any other vegans here?

Crono

Lifer
Just curious, though I wouldn't mind swapping recipes and recommending sites and such from time to time. I know a few here have tried it (hi Kaido! *waves*), but wondering if there are any other vegans (RX Vega owners and aliens from the Vega system excluded) on the forums.

I've only been a vegan for 4 years, soon to be 5 this Thanksgiving - both the best and worst time to decide to become a Vegan 😛.

My wife is for 2 months now after watching What The Health. No real difference in energy, weight, vitality really. She's stuck with it though, props to her resolve.

I have no qualms with eating meat, but I will readily admit that a veggie-based diet = faster exercise recovery. I still use a lot of recipes from Brendan Brazier's "Thrive Diet" book, especially if I'm going to be doing anything super physical & don't want to be a complete loaf the next day.

I have a lot of friends who are vegan, and a couple who even run vegan restaurants (will trade computer work 4 food!). Most of them are in it from the animal perspective, a few from the health perspective. But a lot of them have awfully good recipes....anything in particular you're looking for?

Have you tried CFC drumsticks?

If you're looking for meatless meat equivalents, I have a bunch of interesting recipes squirreled away, if you want some links (although my hardcore vegan friends don't even want anything that resembles meat, i.e. no Beyond Burgers or faux eggs or anything, so if you're not interested no biggie).

I will say, for any diet, two weeks isn't enough of a sample time to say yay or nay. Even though I'm pro meat, two weeks is barely scratching the surface of any diet change.

Tigers and lions are the most attractive animals cause of their meaty diet. Think about it. herbivore animals evolved to be ugly. I wonder why?

Other documentaries on Netflix (mainly Vegucated) is how I first got interested, too, but What The Health is one of the newer and better ones.

What does your wife eat? If she was eating relatively healthy before, or if her vegan diet now mostly consists of processed foods - it's surprisingly easy to fit in a lot of sugary vegan goods, which is why I don't bake often 😀 - it may not make an impact.

For me it was a fairly immediate impact in energy level, weight loss, and... bowel health (all that fiber...I wish someone told me to introduce the higher fiber vegetables, legumes, and fruit into my diet slowly 😱). Longer term I found it helped with my asthma (never use an inhaler now, though regular excercise also helped with that) and with reducing frequency and intensity of migraines (though I also tend to avoid my trigger, anyway).

Not that I'm advocating the vegan diet as the "perfect" diet. Actually, I'd say people who aren't interested in researching nutrition and the vegan diet shouldn't do it. You at least need to be aware of certain deficiency risks, mainly B12. On the whole, though, there is plenty of research into vegan diets being healthier than the "average" diet, but there are other balanced diets out there (Mediterranean being one of the most researched) being excellent. So I'm not knocking other people's personal choices when it comes to diets. 🙂 As with most things, it's a YMMV.

I nibble on carrot sticks and I like veggie + fruit = smoothies.

I can remove meat and eat fish but fish is soo goddam expensive in the UK, especially fresh fish from the fishmonger. I love seafood, I can ditch the meat and eat seafood for the rest of my life. Why is fish so expensive, the cheap fish are makeral and some other crap fish and they taste really porky if you know what I mean. I love sea bass, turbot, crab, lobster, squid, haddock, cod, and some other fishies that I can't name top of my head 😀

I am not a vegetable though because I do eat meat 🙁

I like meat analogues from time to time, though I don't really crave meat anymore (and this is from someone who used to eat plenty of meat).

I need to get my hands on unripe jackfruit. Jackfruit is delicious just as fruit when ripe, but I see so many fun recipes I want to try with jackfruit. I was just in Florida this weekend and the tropical fruit availability there is incredible... I should have snuck into Jeebus' house and stolen all his fruit, I was close enough. 😀

For some reason I haven't, but I've been meaning to. I know I can get it in Chinatown, for sure, I need to head down there more. Local fruit markets probably carry it as well, but I can't remember the last time I saw durian. Most regular markets don't carry it because of its distinctive smell.

always buy the soft meat durian and do not buy the hard meat ones because they are not sweet, basically, the squishiest and mushiest is the best 😀
its really expensive in the UK it cost £40 in Birmingham for the whole fruit 🙁
