Any other old people going back to college (or what is your major)?

I've decided to go back to school next semester, and I'm excited so I started this thread. I'm 28, I got my Associate's degree when I was 23 after having dropped out of college at 16. I've put off getting a Bachelor's for a while, and after dealing with a mountain of health issues, I'm going back in January. I'm talking to my advisor to get my schedule lined up. I'm taking World Civ 2 and either Geographic Systems or Probability and Statistics I.

My company really encourages degrees, and they'll pay for it, so I figure what the hell. I think I'd like to ease in to school and not do a 300-level math class at first. I'm majoring in Mathematics.

Any other old (relatively) people going to school? What's everyone majoring in?

this spring ill be knocking out some accounting classes i need for a raise. hopefully the girls will still be as tasty as last time i attended :awe:

OP, you need to be more specific. What do you consider to be "old" when referring to "old people"?

BTW I received my MBA at the age of 38.

I started again at 32 and grabbed my BA in History/PoliSci, then was on to my Masters in Secondary Education when I had to leave yet again. I've been slooooooooowly working on my Math & Chem BS's in the interim until I can get back to the Masters.

Good luck and have fun with it. I'm jealous...I'd rather be in school full time than doing just about anything else.

I graduated from high school last spring, and I'm in my first semester of college. Honestly, I am beginning to question why I picked a major with five different math requirements (computer science). I can barely pass Algebra as-is, I'm not sure how I'm gonna pass calculus. College in general is a lot of hard work going full time, especially when I have to balance a part-time job as well. It's funny because throughout almost my entire high school experience, I thought I had my college plans set and layed out for me, until I actually got INTO college. Nowadays I have no idea what the hell I'm doing. I never thought I would turn into one of those people, but now I am. I'm still adjusting to things though. I'm at a very transitional period of my life.

I think I'm going to take things a bit slower, rather than trying to achieve my BS at 22. Programming isn't as satisfying as I thought it would be, and since I like hardware more than software I think I might just get a Cisco networking certificate from my school or something, along with some other nicer classes.

But yeah. I hate math.

Im 27, started at CC 3 years ago to finish a double associates, transferred to a local uni this semester to start my BS in industrial technology with an IT concentration with the intent that I just work in IT (i present work as an IT intern at a large area hospital). I have *zero* interest in the industrial technology courses, but oh well.

I really, really hate school. I hate busy work. I hate classes that go too in depth on shit I will never need, use, or even begin to be interested in. I also hate the commute, being surrounded by teenagers whenever Im on campus (yes, i was a teenager, yes, I was obnoxious)(at least some of the chicks are really, really hot though) and I hate riding a bus.

I like learning about things im interested in, so its not all bad, and considering the craptastic job market I just as well be in school as be working for meh pay and not really heading anywhere.

/needs a fast forward button for life.

There were a decent number of older students in my EE classes. They weren't the genius top students, but they always did well. Unlike us younger students, they actually had good study habits.

I'm 36 and about to wrap up an AS in Network Services Technologies in December. Of course, I've been in school just about my whole life, and I don't think that's gonna change. Being in IT, I'm always going for certifications and as much education as I can. Although I do like to take classes that have nothing to do with computers, though. I squeeze them in whenever possible.

Heh, it was just kind of a joke, I didn't realize I'd cause a stir. I just meant people who are going back to school. I have a 50 year old coworker going back to school. It's awesome.

Math major? Switch before you drive yourself crazy.

I'm just doing it because I enjoy mathematics. My career is pretty well set, though a bachelor's might mean a little more money, I like to think that I've proven myself.

Im sorry but 28 is not old. Get back to me when you are 37 like me lol.

Get off my lawn! You're both young enough to be my kids. I was half way through a CS degree when I lost my educational benefits after 911. Our financial situation has recently taken a turn for the better and I'm thinking of going back for a computer engineering degree. Screw CS and the punks/professors that teach it.

Hey, no worries.

When you get to my age one of the things you fear the most is being considered "old". It took me a long time to realize that "old" is a relative term. A 16 year old may consider a 25 year old to be old.

You sound EXACTLY like I did when I started college 2 years ago. Except I entered taking calculus. One semester in, engineering calc and an entry programming class under my belt and I switched to business. Forget all that bs you have to do. I can't stand sitting in front of a computer screen for 8 hours a day. I like hardware too.

I'm doing an MIS degree now. Junior year. I work full time. And have more time than I did taking CS and ENG classes. Theres still some programming involved, but it's completely business oriented. Check it out if you've got any interest in business. It's the perfect major for me.

Now if only I could somehow motivate myself for these retarded core classes. They really are biting me in the ass. These core classes are about 3x as hard as any one of my business classes have been.

I'm 26 with a BA

might end up back in school for medical classes/PA school

or Bio if I get really bored

Mostly I hated the attitude. It was like reverse discrimination, they'd been called nerds all their life and now they were going to make us pay. "What, you don't get the example I posted in another language than the one we're studying? Stop wasting my time, there's 10 more waiting to take your place."

That sucks. I'm in two different computer science courses right now, and the professors are actually really nice. Granted, they're introductory classes though... I guess it would make sense if I started getting the snobby professors in 3rd or 4th-year classes.
