I've had a swallowing problem for 3 months now. Finally went in to figure things out. I've also had HORRIBLE heartburn/reflux this year more than I ever have. They wrote me Protonix yesterday but the hospital called me and a GI specialist wants to see me next Friday at 630am for an EGD.

Guess this is where I learn in life a higher insurance payment out of my check is better. My deductible is $4k. GDI. So much for being healthy, keeping your body in good shape and having a decent diet. Oh, and being very active.

Looking at average rates for the procedure it looks like I'll be dropping $2-3k.

I'm thinking of pushing the appointment back a few weeks and seeing if protonix does anything for me before I go and drop money for that. Can any one fill me in on their experience if related in any way?

:beer;

Cost me $608 out of pocket and I have a hernia in my throat and groin.

FUCK

You should do the procedure as soon as possible. If you have cancer waiting could mean your life.

I've gotten by 3 months like it is now. It's definitely a PITA/irritation/uncomfortable feeling but it's not causing a negative impact on my way of living. Well.. I don't take any more pills(fish oil, vit a/c/d and multi vitamin) because I've developed this huge mental block that they are going to get stuck(a few have a few times where I had to reach down my throat and felt the pill just hanging there causing myself to gag.

I think I'm going to push the procedure until the end of the month so I can try the meds first. I was just about to begin my search for houses:( Got a nice down payment I've been saving since last year. Sick of renting!

I suppose it could be worse.

That seems kind of strange that they're jumping straight into an EGD.

IIRC, with my (somewhat) similar symptoms they did X-Rays, followed by an upper GI series, followed by a CT, *then* they did an EGD/Colonoscopy, after that a HIDA scan...

They never did figure out what was going on, but my out of pocket expense for everything was less than $100.

Sounds like he has a policy set for catastrophic coverage.

I just have shitty insurance=p Figured I was young, be ok for now not having a smaller deductible.

Guess I was wrong. Man, the feeling where it's at in my throat feel like it's around an area I can open my mouth and see. Then again, I could be dead wrong. I'm HOPING the acid from my stomach burned me somewhere and that's why I have that feeling. Maybe it's just an extreme case of acid reflux.

I had an ERCP (somewhat related to EGD) procedure last year when my gallbladder tried to kill me. It was easy and painless. No worries. My procedure was done in an OR, but many docs do it in their office. Basically it will go something like this.

1. Doc will talk to you and explain procedure.

2. Doc will give you something to relax

3. Doc will tell you to lay on your left side. He/she may ask you to reposition your upper body.

4. Doc may use a numbing spray on the back of your throat.

5. You will then be knocked unconscious for the procedure using light anesthesia.

6. You will then wake up with a sore throat and a sore butt!

Just kidding about the sore butt. Your throat might hurt a little from the scope, but its not too bad. Certainly nothing to fear.

I wouldn't wait on the procedure if I were you. If you have acid reflux as bad as you say, waiting could 6be at the risk of permanent damage to your esophagus. http://www.webmd.com/heartburn-gerd/guide/complications-untreated-gerd

Also, don't assume that you understand how your insurance works. The deductibles and charges can be really wonky. Case in point - my daughter had open heart surgery last year and I had an ERCP and cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal). Amazingly we did not hit our deductible cap ($8k for family), despite hospital charges well north of $150k. If it matters, we have an Aetna Healthfund plan.

I've had the procedure a number of times. I have a Barret's Esophagus. I've been on Prevacid for like 20 years, but as long as I take it every day I wouldn't know I had it. The procedure isn't all that bad. They sedate you with demerol which is actually kind of pleasant but for some reason they add some versed to the cocktail, which for me is the worst part. It is an amnesiac and it turns you into Mr. Short Term Memory for a few hours. That and having to find rides to and from (they won't let you drive) are the worst part for me.

Alcohol is also a great catalyst for allergies.

I had an inguinal (groin) hernia repaired last year. You should probably pick out a classy cane before your surgery, you will probably want it for a month or two after. But, I say probably because some guys have had hernias repaired and gone back to work on the farm the next week.
