The characters in CSI are almost always wearing some sort of uniform when in the field.

As for realism...it's television. Aren't you one of our resident corps of 24 junkies? Because if you are, don't even try to complain about a show being unrealistic.

Just watched season1 via netflix :) Season2 discs should start arriving from today, and the HD version is awesome! I never saw any of them before watching the current season, so its interesting to go back and see how it all came about.

I never watched CSI, until a couple of months ago Spike was having a marathon and I decided to see what all of the fuss was about. The episode I watched was about a guy who dies on a plane. At the end of the show it was proven that the guy had some kind of chemical imbalance that made him a bit surly, so all of the passengers in first class (and the stewardess) decided to KILL HIM. They were all in on it, and decided to hush it all up, but those CSI folks figured it all out.

<sarcasm> OK, so I realize this happens all the time, I've been on several flights where me and the other passengers decided that another passenger was making a bit too much noise and we all killed him and kept it secret. </sarcasm>

This is the type of show that everyone's watching? Give me a break, how unrealistic can you get? Are all of the episodes this far fetched?

It was supposed to be a mob mentality kind of thing. You're thinking too hard. I will reiterate that it's TELEVISION. It's not science, it's entertainment. I guess you just watch Biography and the History Channel all day long?

No, but I expected it to be a little more realistic, not Bizzaro World mentality where anything can happen and it doesn't have to make sense.

So what do you watch on television that is so realistic and believable?

Is it that unbelievable that people tried to restrain a guy whom they perceive as a threat, things got out of hand, next thing you know he is dead and everybody gets their story straight in the hopes they don't go to jail? It's really not that far-fetched. It's not like it doesn't happen in real life

lol, remind me not to get on an airplane with YOU!

What I watch on TV is irrelevant. I had seen the commercials for CSI and thought that it was a show based on science, and how these people use facts and science to solve murder cases. That was my mindset while watching the single episode I watched. When I realized how far fetched their explanation was, I realized that I was mistaken in my previous mindset, and decided that the show was not what I thought it was. I was just wondering if all of the episodes were as far fetched as this one, or if they were more realistic. If they are all as far fetched, I do not understand the appeal of this show, unless it is more of an "X-Files" type of show and I was missing that point from the beginning.

Personally, if I were on a plane and another passenger was getting a little loud, I would not kill him, and I really don't know anybody else who would. If another passenger killed him, I don't think I would have a problem pointing the killer out to the authorities. Then again, I've never been in that situation, so who knows? Maybe I would eat his liver (with some fava beans and a nice chianti, fupfupfupfupfup).

No, I just can't suspend my disbelief for long enough to enjoy these types of shows. Of course, this comes from someone who is about to cancel satellite because it just doesn't get watched!

Sure it's relevant. Because there isn't much on TV that is realistic, and with the exception of documentary and news programs, it is rarely intended to be realistic. So I want to know what you are watching that isn't disappointingly unbelievable because I would like to see for myself.

I had seen the commercials for CSI and thought that it was a show based on science, and how these people use facts and science to solve murder cases. That was my mindset while watching the single episode I watched.

I'll be honest with you. That's just silly. That's almost as bad as those people who saw those commercials for "Guess Who" and believed that the cards actually had little cartoon mouths and would talk to you. It's never advertised as being a scientifically realistic show. They don't say "See how Gil uses phenophtaleine solution to discover hidden bodily fluids...." They say "A SHOCKING MURDER YOU HAVE TO SEE TO BELIEVE."

If they are all as far fetched, I do not understand the appeal of this show, unless it is more of an "X-Files" type of show and I was missing that point from the beginning.
Goes back to my original question - what the heck do you watch on TV? The appeal of the show is purely entertainment and it is patently successful at accomplishing that goal. So what are you watching that is not news/documentary but is so realistic?

If you flat-out don't like entertainment programming (see Patt's post above) then you're at least thinking in a straight line.

Personally, if I were on a plane and another passenger was getting a little loud, I would not kill him, and I really don't know anybody else who would. If another passenger killed him, I don't think I would have a problem pointing the killer out to the authorities. Then again, I've never been in that situation, so who knows? People have flown off the handle. It actually happens. I gave you a link of a recent "mob mentality" type incident. Sorry you don't believe it. You bought the commercial hook, line and sinker but now your a sceptic about whether or not such a thing could happen?

I'm not defending CSI as a bastion of factually-accurate entertainment programming. But such an animal is a myth, and it seems ludicrous to dislike CSI because it's "So far-fetched" and then switch the channel to Survivor or ER or Numb3rs.

Actually, in this context, it is irrelevant what other shows I watch. As I explained, I watched this show under the impression that it was realistic, not fantasy where anything can happen. My mistake.

I had seen the commercials for CSI and thought that it was a show based on science, and how these people use facts and science to solve murder cases. That was my mindset while watching the single episode I watched.

I have no idea what a "Guess Who" card is (link?). And the commercials for CSI do make it look like a realistic show, that uses science to solve murders.

OK, the only shows I watch are Wrestling and South Park, as these shows are the only scientifically realistic shows on TV. This does not excuse CSI for the unrealism (is that a word?).

Personally, if I were on a plane and another passenger was getting a little loud, I would not kill him, and I really don't know anybody else who would. If another passenger killed him, I don't think I would have a problem pointing the killer out to the authorities. Then again, I've never been in that situation, so who knows? I think you are defending the show, for some reason you are defending it like a rabid wolverine, but I'm enjoying the debate as my macros do their magic and I sit here unable to do any real work. I understand mob mentality, and agree that it does happen, but generally not on an airplane (and I believe this was in first class, if I'm not mistaken). Remember the guy with the plastic explosive in his sneakers on the plane a couple of years ago? He was subdued, not killed, and there was such a ruckus about the whole thing, most people still remember it. Imagine if they had killed the guy, and then every single person decided not to tell anybody what really happened. Possible? I vote no.

What else goes on with this show? Are there aliens, like X-Files, to blame stuff on? Time travel? Magic bullets? Just wondering.

Guess Who was a board game with cards with little cartoon faces on them. In the commercials, the little faces had superimposed cartoon mouths and would talk back to the kids playing the game. It was a big scandal because there was a critical mass of people, both kids and adults, actually believed that the cards would talk back to you and claimed they were mislead by the advertising.

CSI does not need an excuse. Nor does American Idol. Nor does 24, Alias, Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal, Battlestar Galactica, or any other show on television. It is not a scientific show. It is not intended to be accurate, factual or educational. It's purely intended to entertain.

Seems suspicious to me that you won't tell us what you like...
How about this - name me some factually accurate entertainment shows?

I think you are defending the show, for some reason you are defending it like a rabid wolverine, but I'm enjoying the debate as my macros do their magic and I sit here unable to do any real work.
The show itself doesn't matter. I'll have the same reaction for anyone who claims to dislike a fictional program because it is not factually accurate (which is basically the definition of fiction), regardless of what the show us.

Think Scooby Doo in live action, minus pot and the dog. Crime occurs. There is a music video of them gathering evidence. They analyze the evidence. Question the wrong guy. Another music video of gathering evidence. Question the right guy but don't have enough evidence and they both know it. One more music video. The bad guy confesses this time. Captain Brass makes a corny "Murder is still a crime" type joke. Roll credits.

I imagine a factually accurate CSI show would actually be quite boring.

I think we all know that CSI isn't an accurate representation of the reality of the job. I remember reading an article that said tens of thousands of people signed up to become CSIs (or whatever they're really called) when the show first came out. Not too many of them stuck it out past the first few weeks. Apparently they were shocked to find out that they would have to learn things.

Original > New York > Miami
The way David Caruso talks just drives me absolutely batsh!t.

well yea they do explain this on the bonus features on dvd. its mostly unrealistic in that the people are combinations of jobs. no one has that many specialities. like one guy at the fbi might be a bug expert, and people send him stuff to work with. and of course the speed of the work,..and that csi's aren't detectives who deal directly with suspects. let alone have guns. course u gotta be entertaining, and real work of 8 hours picking through a field sifting dirt isn't fun to watch. the tech they have is real though. they bought real machines as props. course most csi departments aren't anywhere near well funded enough to afford all that lol:)
