I've already got kids and definitely don't want more. My girlfriend wants to get her tubes tied, but she can't find a doctor to do it. They've all refused since she's only 27 and hasn't had any kids yet. She's sure she doesn't want any, so I figure it's up to me to go under the knife.

From the people I've talked to about the pain involved with a vasectomy I've gotten answers from "Didn't hurt." to "Weeks of intense pain." so I thought I'd start a poll.

10 minutes, in and out. No problems. A little bruising, but after a week (actually 4 days, if I remember) I was back in action.

I think its out patient right? It can be that bad, maybe as bad as getting your wisdom teeth out?

That's pretty much the way it was for me. It's not that big of a deal, and 1000 times easier on the guy than the woman. I have zero respect for those guys out there who refuse to do it, but allow their wife to do it.

But it does vary from person to person.

Just remember to take it very easy for the next day or two afterwards. And a bag of frozen peas or corn is your best friend! ;)

Kudo's to you Chris for taking the ego hit (and a small amount of pain) instead of forcing the woman to do it. The methods for women are much more involved and risky. For men, it's a quick 10 minute in and out thing.

I can't stand gutless pussies that make a woman go through an actual operation and the risks associated with it, when they could just go in for a quick snip and be a little sore for a couple weeks.

The only negatives I've heard about vasectomys were an increased chance of prostrate cancer. In the last 3 months or so, some better studies were done and more or less labled the previous beliefs as myths.

If my wife and I decide to have a 2nd child, after she gives birth and is in the recovery stages of pregnancy, I am going in for a snip. She went through the pain of child birth, I endure a couple of days of pain.

I've heard this from several friends already, and it goes something like this....

I had it done Friday afternoon. The doctor said it will feel tender for a couple of days. I felt fine Saturday. I must be Superman, so I mowed the yard. When I woke up Sunday, my balls felt so swollen I swear they were dragging when I went up the stairs. I should've listened to the doctor and just sat there all weekend watching tv....

BoberFett,
It hurt like nothing else! I broke the operating bed I was on after the first snip. Threated to kill the doctor before the second snip. Found ice was man's best briend for 48 hours afterwards. For me it was 24 hours of intense pain, 48 more hours of discomfort and a lifetime of not worrying about having anymore "Ooooops".

Janine doesn't do well with hormonal birth control. She tried birth control pills a long time ago and they messed her up. She tried Depo Provera and that did the same thing.

Right now she has an IUD, which is supposed to be very effective. But we're looking for something with a 100% success rate. That means one of us gets cut. I'd rather it be me than her.
