I drink, sometimes quite a bit around people during certain events. I have yet to make a fool of myself or get escorted by the cops. If you can't fully control it then don't do it.

I used to drink (more like Drink) Everyday, all day for 20 years. No big thing, never had a DUI or any trouble with police. Had to write a few (2 or 3 times a year) apologies but all in all a fun drunk. On my 40th birthday came to realize" Is that all there is?" and stopped cold. It sucks at 8 o' clock when the party is starting and everyone looks to be having so much fun but at 11 when everyone is falling down and telling their innermost thoughts and doing increasingly cringe worthy acts it is cool to be able to drive home and not worry about being stopped. I like to say that I didn't have trouble everytime I was drunk but everytime I was in trouble I was drunk.

If I tried to, I'm sure I'd die from lack of vodka and beer in my bloodstream. Bodily functions would shut down.

I've never been the type to drink to loss of control, so I've no need to stop drinking.

I've drank to the piont that I've made a fool of myself and have been escorted out of an event by security/police a few times. Those times make the best stories. :)

I don't wanna quit but I should cut down. Not too long about, for about 2 or 3 weeks straight, I'd be drunk pretty much everynight off vodka. I guess having alcholics on both sides of the family doesn't help either.

Google periodic alcoholic and read well young man. :)

Once you drink, you seem to pass-out, puke or bad sh!t happens. :D That is an alky dude!
10~12% of the US population should never drink spirits.

Well that's the thing, i don't go batshit every time i drink ... but there are many instances where I went overboard.

Sounds like stopping drinking is a good thing for you then. Here's to your success. (There's no anti-beer emoticon, or I'd use it.)

How old is the OP? 25 or younger? I think you'll find that as you get closer to 30 your desire to drink and your bodies ability to "handle" it will start to fade. At least for a lot of people. If alcohol addiction runs in your family all bets are off, but for most of us you just start to lose that itch to drink. And if you do, after three beers you start feeling the hangover come on before you even get to bed. Plus as you get older and more settled in, your weekend binging sessions at the club really start to lose their appeal.

I'm 23 - I'm by no means alcoholic (I don't drink outside of 'going out') .... apparently can't control myself.

Given your family history and personal track record, I think your only real choice is to go cold turkey. There's no middle ground. That's pretty much the only way that you can "fix" it.

Alcohol abuse isn't about frequency, it's about control. The booze controls you. Not the other way around.

Nothing like a good glass of red with dinner, or an ice cold sparkling ale to wash down a barbie on a hot day , or a crisp gin martini with a green olive on a warm summers evening :)

..if you have the personal control to ..control. Enjoy. Fact of the matter is damn few people have that kind of control. So it becomes easier to not bother with booze and it's health consequences. May be more important for women to not drink due to the increasing evidence and correlation between booze and breast cancer.

..other things happen too. as the liver fails the body tries to compensate and live on thru something called angiogenesis. It will grow a bypass artery around the dieing liver. Once the "shunt" is complete you'll die in about 72 hours.

Intrahepatic hypoxia may occur during the inflammatory and fibrotic processes that characterize several chronic liver diseases of viral and autoimmune origin. As a consequence, new vascular structures are formed to provide oxygen and nutrients. Angiogenesis involves a tightly regulated network of cellular and molecular mechanisms that result in the formation of functional vessels. Of particular importance are growth factors, molecules involved in matrix remodeling and cell migration, and vessel maturation-related factors. In recent years, a number of studies have examined the expression and function of many pro- and antiangiogenic molecules in the setting of nontumoral chronic liver diseases and liver regeneration. This review examines the potential pathogenetic role of angiogenesis in the context of viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, and alcoholic liver disease. The future perspectives for research in this field are outlined.

I'm not at all a heavy drinker... But I have begun to be concerned about calorie intake, as a couple of beers a day adds up.

I drank heavily from 15 to 19. Massive binges most weekends, almost always had a few pints around and some 40's in the fridge for anytime drinking.

I met a girl and just stopped. She wasn't into it and I was into her. I've had maybe 4 drinks in the last 16 years.

Not everyone is blessed as I was. A LOT of people have the addiction gene (as purported by addiction medicine specialist Dr. Drew) so once you start, you go and go until a true bottom is hit, then it's rehab city and meetings until you die.

Never really started, so can't really say I've stopped. I'm happy with coke. However, someday I gotta get me a case of Guiness for the afternoon.
