Any of you give blood regularly? Found out I'm O-

I'm O- and have been donating every 6 weeks (give or take) since 16. I'm 25 now and am really glad karma was on my side. I was in an accident last summer and needed 4 separate transfusions. They made me wait a year after the accident to donate again and on the within 8 hours of my availability on July 1st, I got the 'urgent need' call again. Went down and gave my unit and felt pretty good about it. I can assure you, it's a lot more fun watching the blood come OUT of you as opposed to IN!

If I remember correctly, my donation in September will be my 2nd whole gallon since I started going to Memorial Blood Centers 3 or 4 years ago. Maybe it was more. I don't know...

so long as the blood going out goes directly into a bag right? 😛

A+ and I donated irregularly before working at the hospital. Now I donate every time they do a drive by the cafeteria. I get a meal card and get to donate on the job...win/win.

I'm O+ & CMV-

I usually got called on for platelet donations and they would get mad at me if I tried to just do whole blood without giving up a few rounds of platelets first. For those that don't know, depending on your platelet count you can donate platelets again in 48 hours. Anyhow, after a while it gets sort uncomfortable to be stuck multiple times in a week.

Now with that being said I haven't actually donated platelets in a few years since I moved and it's been a while since I've done whole blood.

Nope...the vampires don't like my blood.

Of course, that means I don't get the free cookies and orange juice...🙁

They told me once upon a time what type I was and it was one of the more widely used types but I don't remember what.

Sadly I have an irrational fear of giving blood that I can't always master so I don't give as often as I could (If I am not careful I will hyperventilate and have narrowly avoided passing out a couple of times)

Lord help me if I go more than 6 weeks without donating. The red cross will blow up my phone day after freaking day. It's been 8 weeks since I donated and, I kid you not, the Red Cross called me Friday, Saturday, and Monday

I'm O Positive so I'm in the 2nd most useful group after O Negative, but I'm not allowed to give blood. The miliary uses quite a bit of blood, but the vast majority of us can't donate due to living in malaria risk zones like Afghanistan or Iraq.

I'm also not a fan of the needles. I'm not going to faint, but it's still unpleasant, it took me weeks of continuous work before I was comfortable sticking other people with relatively small 18ga or 20ga catheters for IVs, I'm no fan of taking them too.

I gave blood on a whim for the first time a few weeks ago, the red cross sent me a little note saying thanks and that since i'm O- (news to me) there is an 'urgent' need for donations due to compatibility, so I guess I'll be there more often than I had thought. All in all a pleasant experience, any of you give blood?

WTF would you give blood without getting paid?

I think they pay for plasma. Go donate plasma for mad cash!

You can't donate and get paid. Those terms are basically mutually exclusive.

Also by Federal law, patients cannot receive biological materials that have been paid for. So when you get paid to "donate" plasma, that plasma is being sold to research organizations to be used for experimental material (e.g. control matrix). So perhaps it could provide some indirect benefit to people, but not in the same sense of platelets or blood donations.

Used to be a regular donor. AB+ representing. Need to start up again.

Also sold plasma for awhile, helped fund excesses in Ireland.

O- here I donate as often as possible. It's easy because they actually set up in one of conference rooms here. As a bonus they give out cookies and juice afterward.

O+. I give blood when I can, but I've had tattoos and stuff that have prevented me. Most recently, I have to wait a year or two since my BIL moved out, 'cause he has HepC + HIV.

A+ and Cytomegalovirus negative.
I give whole blood (I don't have the patience for double red or platelets). I actually get rejected a lot because of low iron. I probably end up donating, waiting my 8 weeks, then spending ~4 weeks as I make a few more attempts before my iron gets high enough.

I wish they would bring back soda and famous amos at the refreshments area. I don't remember when it happened, but these days they only offer crappy juices and grandma brand cookies. I don't want that shit, give me soda and famous amos!

Also A+ and low iron-maybe they run together. Give up caffeine (including tea) to boost your iron. I now also take over the counter iron pills and haven't been rejected since starting the pills.

In my area they give out Lorna Doones, and I haven't seen those for sale anywhere in years. Also a coupon for a free carton of Friendly's ice cream if you donate in July.

I started donating pretty late but next week I will reach three gallons.

Paying people for blood donations was a downfall and the reason so many diseased drug addicts lined up to donate. Thankfully, that has now been fixed, but many blood recipients died due to this practice.

No idea what I have. I had my first blood test ever las year around this time, and I didn't care for the prick. Haven't been back since, no plans soon to give. Pussy.

That's a fact.

A+ approaching 5 gallons but I'm older than most of you.
