Any of you get a fee for buying gas with a debit card?

I noticed on my online bank statement there was a $1.00 fee for charging around $90 with my debit card, at my local convenience store. No sign no nothing.

Really pisses me off, can I do anything about this other than never buying gas there again?

hehe....sorry, i just read the thread and saw your name, and the two were like SNAP!!!

You are worried about a one dollar fee charged at a gas station? i'd be worried about the 90 dollar fee myself. If your bank didn't collect the fees, they would probably go out of business..

I don't use my debit for it. I use my credit card (get points, points turn into cash back later, not much but every bit helps).

What $90 fee? He bought $90 of gas (or other convenience store stuff) at the gas station.

I don't think my Citi debit card charges me for using it as a CC or a debit card, but I don't think I'll ever find out as I just charge stuff to one of my CCs and pay it off at the end of the month.

The only "Fee" I pay is that the bleepin gas stations charge 6-9 cents extra per gallon for using a card (credit or debit).

So now I have to remember to go get cash to pay for gas... or pay the extra $$.

This was not a fee from my bank, but from the gas station! I have never once been charged any kind of fee from using my debit card from anyone.

90.00 of gas. is that not a fee of sorts. i'd be much more upset about it...

Your original post implied that it was some sort of bank fee. I don't think of a purchase as a "fee." A fee in the sense of this post is more like a surcharge on top of the cost of the goods.

Stations around here charge the same, cash or credit.

hmm. i reread my original post and see what you are saying. i thought the period would divide the thoughts, but i probably should have clarified it a bit better. i was impressed though i actually managed the period. 🙂

Are you sure it was a statement and no a "view recent transactions" kind of thing?

A lot of places ping your card with $1.00 to make sure it's backed by a valid account. The charge will go away after a few days.

This.

And frequently it is a 1.00 dollar charge. I think they show up as temporary charges.

I bought gas at Krogers today with a debit card. Not only did I not get a $1 charge I also got $0.20 a gallon off because my GF works for Kroger and we have earned enough points for an additional discount over the normal employee discount of $0.10 a gallon.

i like shaws, because you can combine coupons from shopping there to get gas cheap as dirt. right now i have three 10 cents off each gallon and 2 five cents off. i think i will save them until i can get a tank of gas for like 30 cents a gallon.

I call shens. You specifically said "90 dollar fee".

yawn.

n 1: a fixed charge for a privilege or for professional services

b: a sum paid or charged for a service

it is a privilege to buy anything at any retail store not a right. so i can see using the word fee just fine. by pumping 90 dollars in gas, when he pays the gas station, he is paying a fixed price of 90 for the good he bought. the gas station provides a service to him. if he lives in a few states that require full service and not the option of self service, then even more so.
originally the post was meant has a sarcastic mark about the higher price of gas at the pumps, but obviously the new breed of atot poster lacks the ability to reason and comprehend a remark meant as a shot at the current state of things.
But i stand behind my use of the word fee,

I've only seen that at those Arco stations, but their gas is usually a lot cheaper to make up for it.

$0.45 fee here for ATM/Debit purchases. The Valero down the street is a bit more expensive (~0.03-0.05 per gallon), but it's usually a wash given how much we purchase. But the CC cashback offsets it + more.

It is probably a temporary hold on your account to make sure it's active before the gas flows. There is a local gas station around here that charges a $75 hold. No big deal, except for the poor guy who is close to maxing out his credit card and has to pay an overlimit fee even though the hold goes away in a week.

I haven't been in that situation myself, but apparently a lot of people get burned by these holds. There's a few threads on the net if you google and NPR and other news outlets have done stories on the practice.
