Obligatory "the one I did your mom on last night?"

Being serious though. Its weird that all advertising on this acts like people have like some weird hatred of their beds or put no thought into them, yet I see lots of people that agonize over stuff like this but then its like everyone seems happy because well they probably went from an old mattress that had started to lose support or had other issues, to some new one (where I'm not sure that if they had the ability to really try several different types for extended amount of time, would have felt as good about the one they're talking up). And then of course the people wowed by the memory foam ones coming in little boxes and then rolling out (which has nothing to do with it being comfortable to sleep on).

I don’t know about other people, but as much as I would like to replace some things I use with “green products”, a lot of times the cost of a green product is 2x-3x more than a “toxic product”. Maybe for people who are not on a tight budget they can spend extra money on products that are healthier for them and the environment. I clicked on the website to see how much their equivalent of my current mattress would cost (pillow-top queen size mattress) and the price is $1,799.00 which does not include sales tax.

Considering I paid $550 for my mattress at Macy’s and they took my old one away as well, I find this highly expensive. They do say I can finance the mattress for 12 months with an APR between 10-30%. That is crazy. Even at 10%, I would pay roughly $100 in interest for a mattress. Call me cheap or maybe since both of my parents are accountants and I am in school to be one as well, I am of the belief that if you need to finance something that is not an asset, you can’t afford it. As much as I would prefer to be eco-friendly, it’s not happening with these prices.

Which is the mattress (manufacturer) you’re sleeping on?

I hope you learn better accounting practices than 10% of $1799+tax being "roughly $100". :p

Yeah that's stupid. That link you posted said they have 0% APR financing available, but then if you have good enough credit to get that you can probably get the same terms on a credit card that you will have a use for beyond (and then financing it with you paying it off before the interest comes due, becomes almost a no-brainer as long as you stay disciplined and then smartly put that money to work for you even if its simply accruing some interest).

Shopping for a mattress anymore is a clusterfuck. I've already got the point where I don't trust the foam beds that ship to your house (have a Casper, lasted 3 years at best) and I don't really like the materials used in store brands either. I'm a heavy guy, a side sleeper, and I sleep pretty hot on this foam crap so I'm trying to get away from that.

What say you?
The common problem with foam mattress is that its gets abit hotter than other kinds of beds. Natural 100% latex mattresses is said to be better than synthetic or blended latex if you prefer foam type mattresses.

We recently bought a Beautyrest Silver something from one of the local furniture stores. Heavy mofo...around 150 lbs just for the top mattress. Sleeps like a dream. Firm support, yet comfortable. My wife gets up to pee 3-4 times per night. I always knew when she got out/in bed...now, not a bit of movement when she does. Perhaps the best mattress we've owned in almost 45 years together. (and we've NEVER bought cheap mattresses...technology has just changed for the better)

My recommendation if you're spending money is to get an extra firm Simmons Beautyrest Platinum. My kids have these and they're really good.

We were on our second memory foam mattress Serta this time and both had developed ridges. Memory foam is crap.

My current mattress is a King Simmons Beautyrest Silver Medium BRS900. I think it was $400 shipped from mattress firm(no box springs). Softer and a little warmer than the Platinum, but a great mattress for the money.

I ended up with a temper pedic medium adapt hybrid. I shopped for mattresses all over the place. I tired the casper, the purple, some beauty rest models too. The beauty rest wasn't bad but I kept going back to the temper pedic. It's a mix of their foam with the small springs at the bottom.

My back pain in the mornings is gone and this was something that was constant with me even though I was in the gym everyday, exercising properly.

I've also never been able to sleep on my side on any other mattress I've had. On this one I can easily sleep on either side. I was always a stomach sleeper but now that's changed. It was expensive but this is the first time I actually splurged on such a purchase and I'm glad I did.

I walked downstairs after working all day and it appears my wife didn't have fresh sheets ready for our cleaning staff today...so this is what the mattress looks like we paid $400 for.

The Extra Firm Platinum King can be had for $800-1300 depending on what sales you can get. I ordered it from US Matress at $800+tax last year and my wife talked me into cancelling the order... it's been in the $900+ range since.

The $400-800 silver mattress pictured is softer and warmer than I like, but isn't bad for the money. It's still 100 times better than something with no springs.

I have the Serta mattress (the whole set - bottom frame plus mattress) for a few years and so far, so good.

I'm still using a $500 Ikea foam/cotton/wool combo I've had for about 8 years now and believe it or not it's very comfortable.

Was pretty broke when I bought it and it was the best I could afford. Had expected to replace it asap but after sleeping on it for a bit I started to like it a lot and just kept it.

I'm right now lying on a 30 YO full mattress. I bought it at a now defunct local rather big home-wares store. It was a name brand reputable manufacturer and the sales person steered me away from the most expensive one saying that one step down got me just as good a mattress in terms of construction but just lacked some unimportant flourishes. I still sleep OK on it but the bed frame broke last week. I ordered a new frame, which should come today or tomorrow. I jury rigged the frame in the meantime so I can sleep on the bed. In doing so, I removed the mattress and box spring and could see that the mattress looks not so great in terms of its geometry. I figure I should replace it, possibly the box spring too.

Anyway I thought I would post this to suggest that if you buy a mattress it's really best to get a really well made one. The mattress I had before this one didn't last 10% as long.

Tip: Once in a while (maybe every 6 months) I rotate my mattress. Early on I took a sharpie and wrote one of these numbers just under where your head goes when you sleep: 1 2 3 4. When I rotate the mattress I put the next number under my head ... except if it was 4, the next one is 1.

A mattress salesman once told me that Sears and Macy's use the highest quality components in their mattresses. This means they last what seems like forever vs. a lot of the stuff you get from value mattress stores. That was his explanation of why mattress stores sell for less.

I think he was right. Macy's stuff lasts for 10+ years. I don't know anything about the mattress in a box stuff. My conversation was 20 years ago.

That sounds like a crime scene. We need to see photographic evidence of your system.

9 years in and my approx $500 Ikea "Finnvik" composite-mattress is just as comfortable as the day I bought it with zero sag and very little visible wear of any kind beyond some minor "pilling". (polyurethane-foam with wool core)

I'm sure the fact that it rests on a wood platform rather than a crappy saggy box-spring has a lot to do with how well it's held up though. (plus I'm not a 350lb fattie!)

I've spent substantially over three times as much on a mattress in the past and liked what I got one heck of a lot less!

No idea what mine is, but it's from '98 and I do the marker thing too, but I use dates instead of just numbers.

Sleeping on the floor is for people who either can't afford a proper comfy bed, enjoy pain and suffering or are extremely stupid .... there's not a lot of wiggle-room.

;)
