just a rant, but I bought this thing back in April, use it MAYBE 7 hours a week while I work out... I swear that the battery life is only at 1.5 hours and getting worse...

any of you have this problem?

why the hell would they produce such an expensive POS that has such a sucky battery life???

christ...I'm going to try and get a warranty replacement...but if not, I river here I come...this thing is going to be target practice for my little 22.

i would never buy any thing less than the 4th generation iPod, purely because of the battery life.

have you tried to force charge it? Charge it until full, take it off the charger, then put it back on again. If it takes more than an hour to say it's fully charged again, repeat.

I do this once a month and my battery lasts about 6 hours+ (I bought mine refurbished about 8 months ago.)

It's amazing to me so many people ignore the warnings about ipod and don't even consider other options. Talk about impluse buy.

well because to me there are no other options because
1) look/feel. Hold any other player in your hand and it just doesn't "feel" as nice.
2) interface
3) iTunes

I've had mine for a just over 8 months and the battery still lasts a full day of work. I charge it whenever it is in the car, however.

honestly, i bet it's because the average consumer couldn't name another HD based mp3 player on the market besides the iPod. no other mp3 player is nearly marketed as heavily (and effectively). iPod is synonymous with portable mp3 player.

1) the Rio Karma feels better and so do the iAudio players, the ipod also looks ugly IMO
2) i personally hate it
3) itunes sucks major donkey nuts, everyone i know that has an ipod does NOT USE ITUNES to transfer music, most of them use ephpod, and teh ones that cant figure that out use music match, which was included with the windows ipod before itunes came to the PC

Hey now, I own a Karma and I wouldn't say the materials are as nice as the Ipod's (feels cheaper). It's definitely more ergonomic though (one hand operation is a breeze). I agree with you on the interface and iTunes though.

Oh, and my Karma is going on 9 months. I ran down the battery last night...backlight always on, max contrast, full volume, VU meter display. Battery lasted about 8 hours (tallied up the songs it played). I'd say that's still 10-12 hours of normal usage (3 sec backlight, 50% volume, artist/title display). I use it everyday to and from work and any travel on client visits...generally it lasts a full week or more between charges.

I've had an old Archos Studio 20 for several years now. 20GB HDD, using the Rockbox O/S mod. Yeah, it's kind of big, but not terribly so. Hasn't crashed yet. AND! I can change out the batteries anytime I want.

I'll take serviceability over looking like a metrosexual any day.

I charge my iPod about 2 or 3 times a week and use it every day for around 4 hours so I guess 8 hours is about right.

Look & feel are subjective. I think the ipod is gaudy-looking, like a toy for the young'uns. You probably think it feels good in-hand because of its size - but that size comes at the price of battery life. Other players are bigger because they don't need to be charged every few hours.

Interface is nice, but iTunes is buggy as hell with a moderate to large music collection and tbh I can't see how anyone with a basic knowledge of directory structure can have so much trouble organizing their music with a file & folder manager that they need a program to do it for them. I prefer the more hands-on feel of putting stuff where I want it and organizing it how I want it organized. Not too different from how I feel about manual transmissions, actually. Also, love it or hate it, users should have the choice of using iTunes, not be forced into it by their choice of DAP.

Other downsides to it are low sound quality, battery longevity issues, cheap phono jack connector in the minis with a tendency to break, causing crackling, a bad EQ, an exorbitant pricetag, problems listening to and transferring music you own due to piracy concerns, few features, and no support for ogg, flac, or wma, to name a few.

Don't listen to Gurck, he doesn't know what he's talking about.... he went from saying this about the ipod's interface:
"Not everyone enjoys a user interface that treats them like a 5 year old either"
To this:
"Interface is nice"

Wow! I wonder what Apple changed in 10 days! (nothing)

Also, Gurck says this:

Then says:

clearly "low sound quality" is a subjective comment. It may not have sound quality that is rated as high as some other mp3 players, but to say that the quality is actually "low" is quite subjective.

If you want advice about an mp3 player, Anandtech Off Topic is a great place to ask, just ignore the biased fools who don't know what they're talking about.

I've had the Creative Labs Zen 20 gig for over a year now. Batteries last over 8 hours and charges like a phone. A little bigger and heavier then the ipod but I take it wherever I go. Can't say enough good things about it. Maybe just not as "pretty" as the ipod. Screw the aesthetics, give me a device that does what its supposed to do over the "pretty" sh!t anyday!!!

yes, I hate Itunes as well.. seems buggy to me, crashes a lot and sometimes makes me reboot my PC just to recover the usage of my PC... I realize it was meant to work in Mac OS, but the fact still stands that it SUCKS for Windows :)
