well because to me there are no other options because
1) look/feel. Hold any other player in your hand and it just doesn't "feel" as nice.
2) interface
3) iTunes
Look & feel are subjective. I think the ipod is gaudy-looking, like a toy for the young'uns. You probably think it feels good in-hand because of its size - but that size comes at the price of battery life. Other players are bigger because they don't need to be charged every few hours.
Interface is nice, but iTunes is buggy as hell with a moderate to large music collection and tbh I can't see how anyone with a basic knowledge of directory structure can have so much trouble organizing their music with a file & folder manager that they need a program to do it for them. I
prefer the more hands-on feel of putting stuff where I want it and organizing it how I want it organized. Not too different from how I feel about manual transmissions, actually. Also, love it or hate it, users should have the choice of using iTunes, not be forced into it by their choice of DAP.
Other downsides to it are low sound quality, battery longevity issues, cheap phono jack connector in the minis with a tendency to break, causing crackling, a bad EQ, an exorbitant pricetag, problems listening to and transferring music you
own due to piracy concerns, few features, and no support for ogg, flac, or wma, to name a few.
