Any of you Android folks using a lockscreen app?

gorcorps

aka Brandon
When I had my iphone, I used some app when jailbroken which posted emails/texts/calendar stuff on my lockscreen for easy reading without unlocking. I desire to do the same thing on my android. I've read about a few different options, but none of them seem to stick out as "the best".

So I'm wondering what you all are using. Paid or not, though if paid I'd like to have some sort of a free trial or something.

widget locker is pretty popular,

it never wanted to work right for me, so i gave up, lots of people like it

I was using Agile lock briefly.

very nice--sense style, i think, with customizeable lock screen functions--camera, messaging, phone, whatever you want, with that cool little circle to move around the screen, and transparent background (if you want it) so that you get your home screen wallpaper.

I have turned it off, though, because it doesn't work--screen can be unlocked with the home button, lol.

he released some fixes, but they don't work for me (sgs2, int'l). also had some problems with TouchWiz lock screen popping up on top of or under that one.

No, this defeats one of the major points of the lockscreen, ie, to protect your data from people just picking up your phone and reading your texts, emails, etc. Lock screens should contain only non-personal information, current time, current weather, battery life of the phone, etc.

have both. at home my security is auto disabled (once connected to my home wifi) so the lock screen (WL) choices goes straight to the app i chose. anywhere else and after choosing say email, it then asks for a pattern unlock

I use Agile Lock on the SGS2. It works ok once you've set it up. The screen only unlocks with the home button if touchwiz rather than agile lock is configured as your default app for the home function.

I run the CM7 nightly builds - usually the newest or within a week of it. There's a new lock screen that lets you use the ring style with app launchers - a lot like Sense 3.0. I'm using that, but it's not an app, it's baked into the ROM.

You do not dictate how I use my phone. If I want to put my social security number on there I will.

The lock screen only serves ONE purpose for me. To prevent my phone from being activated in my pocket. That's it. You can use it however you want, but for my purposes I want everything easy to read at a glance.

Exactly. I don't use my lockscreen for anything other than information and accidental unlocks.

Anyway, Widgetlocker is probably the easiest way to do it. It works for most people but it has problems for some people =(

You can put almost any widget on it so the information you want can be right there on the screen. The unlock sliders can also be customized to launch whatever apps you want so on the whole it's quite flexible.

For the tasks widget, the Android Agenda Widget would be a good choice, supporting scrolling and being quite customizable.

Most of the 3rd party sms apps have a decent widget that you can throw on as well.

Remember that you can resize widgets even if the original didn't have the sizes you want.

However, before you run out to buy Widgetlocker, I'd recommend you see if the widgets you want and like are available first. Once you've gotten them on one of your homescreens the way you like it, then think about moving them to WL.

Yeah, its great to be able to control your phone the way you want, isn't it? 😛

Doesn't change the fact that security is a major point of the lock screen. You can choose to circumvent it, if you wish, but it won't change the facts.

Not to be argumentative, but I think of the major purpose of the lock screen the same as gorcorps- to keep ME from accidentally butt-dialing people.

Security for my phone is another matter, and goes a little something like this: NO ONE else is ever getting their hands on my phone, period, lockscreen or not. I don't just leave it laying around anywhere for people to pick up. The 'lockscreen' is just a simple slider anyway, not an actual 'lock' the way I (and a lot of people) use it.

Other than the default 'slide and access' lockscreen, I don't have much security on my phone. I haven't even set a pattern lock, SIM lock, nothing. Wide open. I just don't give a shit, I guess. But then again, I've, somehow, managed to never lose any of my previous phones, either because of negligence or just being plain hammered. Never had any of my phones stolen. I've been lucky. A side note, I don't have any names in my Contacts, all my contacts are listed by initials, first and last name, that's it. I don't know how secure that is but that's how I have it.

and if someone jacks you?

anyway, I used widget locker as well. It was too buggy on the evo3d. It kept waking it up, and would crash at random. And I had two hard locks when it got confused with the sense launcher so I stopped using it. I quite miss it

Also a big purpose of the lock screen. Didn't disagree with that at all.

Phones get lost and stolen all the time, shit happens. Obviously, the lock screen shouldn't be the only security measure you have in place, but its the first barrier. Like the OS login screen on your work computer, entering a username/password is the first barrier. Displaying your emails/texts/IMs over the lock screen is like having your email client accessible before you logged in, or putting a Post-It on the monitor with the local root credentials. Its dumb.

i don't use a password or anything on my lock screen. don't need to.

if my phone is lost or misplaced, i'll have it remote wiped within 5 minutes, If I get it back, i'll DL a nandroid from dropbox and have it restored within 10 minutes.

I can remove the sd card in less than 5 minutes.

But yes, I pretty much do similar. If I'm going into a situation, say a party with friends/associates, I'll create a password on the lockscreen as well. More to prevent people from using my phone to take pictures, etc.

And easily fixed by changing your password to your email as soon as you get phone jacked or lost. That way the email can't log into the server and it won't be able to display the information. A simple call to the service provider can also render the phone useless.

I've been carrying a cellphone of some sort since about 1998, never lost one or had it stolen. I'd be more likely to padlock my wallet as some sort of deterrent to it being lost or stolen as I would to lock myself out of my own phone based on paranoia.

So long as we're dealing with silly hypotheticals, let's take the 'what if I'm jacked' example.
Gun to my face- "Give me your phone!"
"Okay, here you go!"
It's locked. Gun STILL to my face- "WHAT'S THE PASSWORD?"
"Okay, here you go!"

Gee. THAT'S effective. For every made up scenario where some lock screen password supposedly saves my 'super-secret' data, I can easily come up with one where it doesn't mean jack-squat. So I'd rather just not burden myself with ineffectiveness in the meantime.

Most of us are just normal people, not secret agents. In the unlikely event that some thief gets their hands on my phone, they can amuse themselves with my IMs (stuff like my wife asking what time I'll be home for dinner) my emails (similar mundane stuff) and the like for all of the 10 minutes or so that they might have access to it. (None of that stuff is on my lock-screen anyway).

Even with my phone in hand, you cannot get my bank account info, credit card info, or even see any of my passwords as other than dots.

Who the hell would put a post-it on their screen with the local root credentials on it? Not sure I understand that example.
